It would be nice to have some laminated Mallampati and Brodsky diagrams available for some of our infrequent attendings!

If it is a coronal polisher they can review the medical history and get a resident or faculty to do the exam for charting and determine what the option for that patient is and will discuss with the parent/legal guardian.
Thanks.

Hi Beth,
After reviewing medical history & charting, please have a resident or a attending check the patient – resident or attending faculty will determine if it needs radiographs, Hygiene, CC, DSC, ASC, Main OR, sedations or deferring care depending on behavior/extent of treatment needs/medical history/distance travelled etc .
Thanks,

Hi Dr. Kumar,
In order to standardize the Sedation Evaluation appointment does it include a Comprehensive exam and fluoride varnish along with any necessary radiographs?
Thanks,
Beth

Subject: Sedation evals
Hi Everyone,
Following will be the tentative plan (suggestion) for sedation evals …
• As and when Deb Winston or Erika finds a coronal polisher availability Teia will be informed and appointments will be scheduled under generic provider (sedation eval column) – On the day of appointment when the patient arrives and is registered the coronal polisher can assign themselves as a provider. Teia will coordinate every week with Deb Winston & Erika to look for days a coronal polisher is available. We will strive to have at least between 3 to 4 half days slots per week with a coronal polisher.
• Sedation evals with coronal polishers are going to be in Pod D area that is closer to Pod E so any available resident/attending or the child champ from both Pods will be readily available to help with checks and questions.
• Since ER timing is 9 AM on Friday mornings, 3 sedation evals are scheduled at 8:00, 3 are scheduled at 8:30. These are scheduled under generic provider (Sedation Eval). The ER residents & the ER triage resident can see these patients as they arrive. These patients take priority over walk-in patients prior to 9 AM.
• August 22nd Tuesday AM & PM there will be one coronal Polisher doing sedation evals - Attending’s are Dr Amini, Dr Hammersmith & Dr Flaitz all day – (Dr Ehsan & Dr Kwok can help out too with checks for the sedation eval in the AM). Dr Kumar - PM
• August 23rd Wednesday AM & PM there are no Second years we will open up 3 columns for sedation evals which will have 3 coronal polishers - Attending’s on that day are Dr Solis, Dr Hammersmith- all day , Dr Nieman in the AM & Dr Gross & Dr Claman in the PM.( Dr Kumar - AM & PM)
• Also we will see if we can schedule sedation evals with an ER triage residents in the afternoons on Tuesdays & Wednesdays- one at 3:45 & the other at 4:15 – as ER’s are usually caught by then and ER triage residents have an assistant assigned to them already.
• On Mondays when the First years go for ortho seminar with Dr Fields Or Dr Kang at 3 PM– we can schedule sedation evals with at least two or three coronal polishers as they will be free. If there is a coronal polisher assigned to a second year resident then the assistant assigned to a first year resident who is free can switch and free up the coronal polisher. Teia will look at the Residents schedule Dr Amini sends out every quarter and work with Deb Winston & Erica to open these slots.
• Teia will also look at any time there are very few residents on the schedule and there are available coronal polishers she will open the slots for appointments.
• Appointments with a ER residents & ER triage resident on Friday mornings will be 30 minutes duration.
• Teia, Deb or Erika will be informing the attending’s in the morning about any sedation eval appointments scheduled for that day.
• Appointments with the coronal polishers will be of 30 minutes duration for kids below 4 years and for older ones will be of 45 minutes duration. Appointments will be one 30 minute one followed by a 45 minute one. Alternate 30 minute & 45 minute appointments will be to make up for late arrivals/ complex medical history/taking radiographs or may have to do hygiene for cooperative patients.
Please email me of any questions or suggestions,
Debbie or Erika can you please forward this to all dental assistants and hygienists.
Thanks,
Ashok Kumar
Please Note:
• If scheduling sedation eval with a hygienists is a better option( I feel) we can do that instead of coronal polisher as hygienists after reviewing medical history can do the charting without the a resident or a faculty doing the exam for charting – Resident after consulting with the floor attending or an Attending Faculty can determine if it needs CC, Sedation, DSC, ASC, MAIN OR or deferring care.
• In the next few weeks once all the open dental assistant positons are filled, the plan is to have sedation evals scheduled with either a coronal polisher or a hygienists AM & PM at least 2 or 3 days a week.
• Any draw back from each of these options we will improve on it and make it more efficient as we proceed further.
