Author and biologist Olivia Carril is returning to Ohio in September for two events focused on wild bee biology and identification.

Catch the Buzz Wild Bee Workshop

Friday, September 8 from 10AM to 3PM
Stratford Ecological Center in Delaware

Olivia will present an overview of native bee biology, exploring some of the fascinating nuances that separate our common native bees from each other. As we work through different bee groups, we will learn some of the basic features that can help us distinguish these bees in the field, and why native bees are critical to our food supply,


We’ll spend the afternoon outside scouting for bees and observing pollinators as they visit the rich diversity of flowers at Stratford Ecological Center. Explore photographing bees in action and discuss methods for identifying these amazing creatures in their natural habitat. We’ll end our day with plenty of time for discussion and opportunities for continued learning!

Fall Nature Safari: Exploring the Hills of Southern Ohio
Wildflowers, Caterpillars, Bees, Birds, Butterflies and More!

Friday through Sunday, September 8-10
Shawnee Lodge & Conference Center located in Scioto County

Join experts for an immersive weekend experience focused on late summer blooming native flora - goldenrod and asters - and the bees, birds and butterflies that are dependent on them. Indoor and outdoor experiences include lectures, day trips and nighttime nature exploration. Olivia will lead an outdoor field trip and will present on bees and flowers.

This is an exciting and beautiful time of year to be in the hills of Southern Ohio. The prairies should be in the glorious purple and gold colors of Fall with Asters and Goldenrod in full bloom. Bees and other pollinators will be busy collecting nectar and we will include ample time to explore and learn about various pollinator species from your expert trip leaders. No matter what trip you select, there will be something amazing to learn and observe.


Full slate of presenters includes Dr. Olivia Carril, author of The Bees in Your Backyard: A Guide to North America's Bees; Jim McCormac, author of the recent publication Gardening for Moths: A Regional Guide; Dr. Randy Mitchell, Ohio bumble bee expert; and Judy Semroc, author of Dragonflies and Damselflies of Northeast Ohio.
