Our only official guideline is length, 160 words max, but that is relatively new and loosely enforced.

I am responsible for catalog edits. I do work with the Provost to a degree but, for the most part, I oversee all curricular details and academic policies to ensure that only approved changes are made. Other sections are edited by the applicable stakeholder (Director of financial aid, student account/controller, director of admissions, etc.)

We include all active courses in the catalog.

I hope your summer is going well! I am writing to introduce myself as the new registrar (as of Feb) at Denison, by asking you a few questions.

At previous institutions, we always had guidelines or best practices concerning course descriptions. Usually, that meant they were always in the present tense and could be longer than 200 words.

  *   Do you have course description guidelines at your institutions? What are they?
With that two more questions:

  *   Are you responsible for reviewing and publishing the course catalog, do you collaborate with the Provost's office on this?
If not, how does your process work?

  *   Do you publish ALL courses or only courses offered for that specific academic year?
