Subject: Video: Arabic Calligraphy Workshop at 18th Avenue Library
Dear Middle East Studies community,
The Lantern covered the recent Arabic calligraphy workshop co-sponsored with Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, University Libraries, and the Center for Languages Literatures and Cultures. The program drew about 60 participants from across the Columbus community, reflecting strong interest in Arabic language, art, and culture.
The workshop was led by visiting master calligrapher Dr. Muhammad Habib from Harvard University, who has now joined us for this event three years in a row. He introduced participants to the history and practice of Arabic calligraphy and then guided them through hands-on exercises. You will get a good look at his work, as you watch him draw calligraphy on the black board for us in real time during the workshop!
You can watch the video, produced by Lantern TV, here: Ohio State hosts Arabic calligraphy workshop led by visiting calligrapher<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TTdvU_Oppc>.youtube<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TTdvU_Oppc>
For those who could not attend, the video offers a glimpse of the workshop environment and the kinds of experiential learning opportunities we aim to provide. The video highlights the hands-on component, as well, show the participants' hands as they draw on the paper.
Thank you to everyone who helped organize and support this event, and to all who attended and contributed to such a vibrant afternoon of learning. In the video, Dr. Habib demonstrates writing three key words - karāma (dignity), salām (peace), and maḥabba (love). These convey a message at the foundation of the workshop and why we continue to host it.
Please support our campaign to support our outreach and academic enrichment activities! Even a small amount goes a long way. We need your support! go.osu.edu/mesc-fund<https://go.osu.edu/mesc-fund>
