This course offers a cross-cultural, international perspective on current debates in cultural heritage, drawing on case studies from the U.S., Europe, South America, Asia, and the MENA region. Students will explore the social, cultural, political, and economic dimensions of heritage policy ? including the role of UNESCO, nation-state building, memory, digital heritage, heritage diplomacy, dissonant heritage, repatriation and restitution, and illicit trafficking. The course pairs theoretical grounding with hands-on engagement through lectures, discussions, guest speakers, and individual and group projects, including a project based on Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk's novel, Museum of Innocence. The course builds a foundational knowledge of cultural heritage management and is sure to provoke rich class discussion.
