MES Forum,
MESC wishes all who will be observing this holy month of fasting, Ramadan Kareem. Many of you might also be observing Ash Wednesday, the beginning of lent. Because religious fasts and feasts shape the way cultures eat, let's look at an Iranian dish.
Ash-e-jow<https://www.mabmadefood.com/recipe-aash-e-jow/> is typically prepared with barley, herbs, lentils, beans, and might include lamb or beef. It is especially popular during Ramadan for the sustenance and energy it provides after fasting. Barley<https://mesc.osu.edu/barley> is one of the crops we highlight as part of Seeds of Middle Eastern Culture<https://go.osu.edu/>.
Do you have any memories or associations with special foods for breaking fast or honoring a fast? I would love to hear it, and perhaps share it with the kids we’re teaching about Middle Eastern foodways.
Thanks so much to our Lead Intern, Sarah Spencer, for her wonderful work curating the Barley page!
Best wishes,
Melinda
