From Ohio to Oman: Collaborative Efforts in Cultural Heritage

We are pleased to share highlights from recent cultural heritage initiatives here on campus and overseas in Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. These projects reflect our commitment to advancing research, education, and public awareness of cultural heritage and its importance both as a critical area of scholarship and for current affairs. In September, an international group of scholars-including representatives from the Royal Al-Ula Commission of Saudi Arabia-convened for the OCIANA 2.0 Launch Workshop <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://osu.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8aad9a415882af05c91822d20&id=a8dcbeedb7&e=6b437f4be7__;!!KGKeukY!xNUp7BWeocTtPY6p-NTDcKuqWt91T8tSiie_gqE_s4VD84M3opVHaEnsqGCfxjewQZcCTOw1DEAqP_JyLxJ3OOBO$> at Ohio State University to explore image databases that unlock new insights into the history of the Arabic-speaking world. Finally, we convened discussions on the issue of antiquities smuggling, a critical threat to historical preservation, cultural identity, and fuel for crime and conflict.

MESC Director Leadership in Cultural Heritage Projects

The director of MESC, Anthropology Professor Joy McCorriston, is an invited a member of the Scientific Committee of the Royal Al-Ula Commission. In November, she visited Al-Ula (Hegra) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. On the same trip she also visited the Tas Tepeler (Stonemounds) region in eastern Turkey. Discoveries at these UNESCO World Heritage sites are building our knowledge of human history. McCorriston presented her research on small-scale stone monuments that ancient pastoralists erected in Dhofar’s desert interior to students at Dhofar University in October. These monuments were essential touchstones for the social communities that mobile and widely dispersed people needed to survive in arid regions where they could not live in settled, tightly populated villages.

Addressing the Issue of Antiquities Smuggling

We organized two public-facing events to address an important dimension of cultural heritage and how it can be commodified and even weaponized. The Antiquities Smuggling in the Middle East panel<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://osu.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8aad9a415882af05c91822d20&id=06bb8a62ff&e=6b437f4be7__;!!KGKeukY!xNUp7BWeocTtPY6p-NTDcKuqWt91T8tSiie_gqE_s4VD84M3opVHaEnsqGCfxjewQZcCTOw1DEAqP_JyL7dLbnNf$> on April 2nd drew 30 people. This event initiated our collaboration with CIBER and the Risk Institute in the Fisher College of Business. On the following day, we screened Artifact War<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://osu.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8aad9a415882af05c91822d20&id=dc047bfc3b&e=6b437f4be7__;!!KGKeukY!xNUp7BWeocTtPY6p-NTDcKuqWt91T8tSiie_gqE_s4VD84M3opVHaEnsqGCfxjewQZcCTOw1DEAqP_JyL-BNIXys$>, a documentary film exposing criminal artifact smuggling and its connection to terrorism in Syria. Special guests, Amr Alazm and Katie Paul, who play leading roles in the film, joined us for the Q&A afterward.

Collaboration with the Melton Center for Jewish Studies

The Melton Center for Jewish Studies and the Middle East Studies Center, in partnership with the Center for Ethics and Human Values, have received a $75,000 Centers and Institutes Grant from Global Arts and Humanities for a new two-year initiative: "Cross Disciplinary Perspectives on Multi-Ethnic Cultural Production in the Middle East." The Centers and Institutes Grant from Global Arts and Humanities fosters collaboration and interdisciplinary research across units at Ohio State. This two-year initiative, titled "Cross Disciplinary Perspectives on Multi-Ethnic Cultural Production in the Middle East," will spark collaborative research, dialogue, and artistic productions that examine power dynamics and the experiences of minoritized communities in the Middle East, with a particular focus on Israel and Palestine. We invite students, faculty, and community members to participate. There will be opportunities to experience cultural productions like food, dance, and clothing, engage in dialogue about the Middle Eastern cultures and collectivities that produce them, pursue research collaborations as scholars and students, and welcome both experts and the curious to our campus. Whether you join our Big Table, roundtables, audiences, activities, storytelling, or research pods, please join us in building our communities. Mark your calendars:

Seeds of Middle Eastern Culture

The Office of Outreach and Engagement has awarded $10,000 to support documentation and outreach activities with the Vincent Walters Urban Farm. The "Seeds of Middle Eastern Culture" project is about the value of culinary practices connected to backyard gardening, and uses experiential learning and storytelling to engage young people. This project connects university expertise to our local community, promoting cultural exchange through academic learning, hands-on gardening, and online resources. We highlight Middle Eastern food traditions and invite you to share your stories and experiences with culinary practices, foraging, or backyard gardening.

In the autumn semester, thirteen students from Istanbul Technical University’s Urban Planning Department joined 22 students in Ohio State University’s course, Turkish 3797, to collaborate on projects that compare and contrast their cities. Five groups of approximately 8 students each created storymaps focusing on different aspects of life in each city. The course was taught by Sociology faculty member and International Affairs COIL Fellow, Dr. Danielle Schoon, in collaboration with Dr. Eda Yücesoy, Professor of Urban Planning, ITU. Ohio State University now has an official partnership with Istanbul Technical University and we look forward to continuing these activities.

MESC’s outreach program is a cornerstone of its mission, connecting OSU with K-12 educators, the general public, government, military, business, and others. From September 2023 to October 2024, MESC events attracted 1,049 attendees across higher education, K-12, and community sectors. Events such as the “Arabic Calligraphy Workshop,” provide hands-on cultural learning, and webinars such as “Seeking Peace at Home: Central Ohio Faith Leaders Speak,” create easy access to OSU expertise. The Center collaborates widely with university departments and external organizations, co-hosting conferences, workshops, and presentations that extend its impact across Ohio and beyond. Finally, MESC strengthens the university's international ties with partnerships across the Middle East, from Egypt to Yemen, facilitating language studies, research collaborations, and archaeological projects by maintaining the university’s memberships in American Institute of Yemeni Studies (AIYS) , the Center for Arabic Study Abroad (CASA) , The Middle East Studies Association (MESA) , and the American Research Institute in Turkey (ARIT) .

Middle East Studies Center's Professional Support

MESC is committed to continuous improvement of our support to faculty and students, guided by feedback from students, faculty, and community partners we receive through course surveys, forums, and event feedback forms. Please let us know what you think of these resources or if there is something in particular you're looking for that doesn't appear to be here.

The Power of Student Voice: Mid-Semester Feedback Drives Resource Development

Four faculty members integrated the midpoint survey Spring Semester. The Middle East Studies Center offers our affiliated faculty a survey that includes questions about Middle East Studies Center community events. MESC Advisory Board Member, Larry Hurtubise of the Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning, oversees the process and offers a short orientation for faculty regarding the survey and data analysis processes. The input from the students Spring semester guided our decision to create the OSU Middle East Studies Carmen module<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://osu.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8aad9a415882af05c91822d20&id=9291eab098&e=6b437f4be7__;!!KGKeukY!xNUp7BWeocTtPY6p-NTDcKuqWt91T8tSiie_gqE_s4VD84M3opVHaEnsqGCfxjewQZcCTOw1DEAqP_JyL1iNjduK$>, and to actively reach out to faculty and their students (see more under "Easy Ways to Share Middle East Studies Resources for Your Students").

The MCFI survey has been developed through a partnership between the Drake Institute and the University Registrar and enables instructors to receive actionable feedback from students during the semester using Blue, the same system used for the end-of-semester Student Evaluation of Instruction (SEI). To support more generative discussions during the feedback process, the MCFI is designed to be voluntary and fully anonymous for both instructors and students. Larry also shows faculty how AI can be used as a tool to manage student feedback data, and make it more pertinent to the course goals.

In sum, the MCFI provides valuable insights that can enhance teaching, improve student learning outcomes, and make their experience with Middle East Studies more impactful (see more at go.osu.edu/mcfi<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://osu.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8aad9a415882af05c91822d20&id=4140083dae&e=6b437f4be7__;!!KGKeukY!xNUp7BWeocTtPY6p-NTDcKuqWt91T8tSiie_gqE_s4VD84M3opVHaEnsqGCfxjewQZcCTOw1DEAqP_JyLx16D0ED$>). If you would like to learn more, we will be highlighting the Middle East Studies Center's MCFI during "AI as your Tutor: Personalised Learning Redefined," a webinar we for the Digital Learning Institute, out of Dublin, Ireland. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions. Let us know if you would like to participate!

Easy Ways to Share Resources With Your Students

We will come to your classroom personally, or join you online, as needed.

Grants for Course Development

Are you an Ohio State University faculty member thinking of revising one of your courses or developing a new one? If your course development is focused on learner-centered curricula and pedagogical interventions, we highly encourage you to apply for a MESC course development support grant. We can provide between $500 and $1500 depending on the scope of work, and our current budget constraints. It can be a new course or the revision of an existing course. Our mission to strengthen scholarly community within Ohio State, build our collective visibility, and mentor young scholars means course development is an important part of our strategy. Join the Middle East Studies Community at Ohio State

Are you interested in the Middle East, regardless of your department, research focus, or career stage? The Middle East Studies Forum welcomes faculty, students, staff, and alumni to connect, collaborate, and share ideas through regular events and activities. It's a great way to connect to the Middle East Studies community at Ohio State through events and activities. You will find topics and resources relevant to you, regardless of your department, research orientation or career stage. If you are a student, scholar or educator of the Middle East, the forum is an informal space to get together, share stories from fieldwork, talk about issues, learn about colleagues’ research, try out papers you’re working on, etc. Alumni, graduate students and advanced undergraduates are welcome. We host 2 -3 forums per semester, including occasional events that target the general public.

The October 9th 2024 Middle East Studies Breakfast Forum brought people together from Comparative Studies, Anthropology, History, Art Education, Near Eastern and South Asian Languages and Cultures, and others.

The Middle East Studies Forum on October 22nd featured the research of two graduate students. Sydney Hunter’s work at Kimirekkum in Uzbekistan investigates how agricultural systems, the environment, and socio-political structures interacted during Central Asia’s Bronze/Iron Age, using archaeobotany to assess the sustainability of oasis agriculture amidst environmental changes. Shurouq Ibrahim’s dissertation explores how Arab Gothic narratives in modern Arabic and Anglo Arab literature and film use cultural trauma, gendered subjectivity, and spiritual-supernatural elements to depict the horrors and absurdities of colonialism and war.

Each semester on Reading Day for our MESC Community "Read and Feed" features a lunch catered by Lavash, open to any students interested in Middle East Studies. Network with faculty and students from a number of departments over food and to offer each other support during the stress of finals week! We encourage you to join the Middle East Studies Forum<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://osu.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8aad9a415882af05c91822d20&id=aa4dcee6be&e=6b437f4be7__;!!KGKeukY!xNUp7BWeocTtPY6p-NTDcKuqWt91T8tSiie_gqE_s4VD84M3opVHaEnsqGCfxjewQZcCTOw1DEAqP_JyL0PHZrD9$>.
