Dear MES Forum,
Please join us for the Persian New Year celebration today<https://mesc.osu.edu/events/nowruz-celebration-persian-new-year> at 3:00 in Hagerty Hall’s Intercultural Gallery. Iranian refreshments will be served.
We will enjoy a very special opportunity to hear these musicians perform Iranian music and talk about their meaning in Persian culture.
Khosrow Hakim holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Arizona. Originally born in Ahvaz, Iran, in the Southwestern province of Khuzestan, he has made Columbus, Ohio his home for over the past 40 years. He currently works for CTL Engineering, in addition to his independent work in the field of real estate. As a Columbus-based businessman, Mr. Hakim is a man of many talents, including artistic ice-sculpting, Persian traditional singing, and a specialist on the Persian percussion instrument referred to as the "tombak," a traditional wooden hand-drum, prevalent in Persian traditional music.
Behzad Namazi (composer, ethnomusicologist, and multi-instrumentalist) received his PhD in ethnomusicology & music composition from Ohio University in 2020. His research and performance practice are centered around the modal system of Persian traditional music, and the socio-cultural phenomena surrounding this musical tradition. His essays in ethnomusicology and compositional works have been presented at various international festivals and symposia. Dr. Namazi’s forthcoming book chapter, entitled “Tehrangeles: A Glance at the Global Capital of Persian Pop Music,” examines the history of Persian Pop music in Los Angeles through the lens of migration and identity, and will be published in The Oxford Handbook of Global Popular Music in 2025.
I look forward to seeing our community there!
Melinda
