Arabic 5401

Translation: Theory and Practice
Autumn 2025
3 credit hours
Meets on Mondays and Wednesdays, 12:45 pm-2:05 pm in Hagerty Hall 050
This course put the practice of Arabic-English translation in conversation with the field of translation studies, especially as it pertains to Arabic language, culture, and literature. The field of translation studies has increasingly emphasized the political, contextual, and ethical dimensions of translation. As AI translation rapidly being integrated into knowledge production and the workplace, understanding these dimensions are more important than ever. In the course, we will consider several different Arabic language contexts from the early modern period to the present where translation has become a rich site of meaning. These include the aesthetics and politics of translation in colonial and postcolonial contexts, the figure of the Arabic-English / English-Arabic translator, and cultural translation. Through the practice of translation and discussions of the important role that translation has played in modern Arab intellectual and cultural history we will develop both the linguistic skills and critical awareness to make translation an ever-evolving, self-reflexive practice. During the semester, students will select their own translation projects and share, discuss, and revise them in a collaborative and supportive environment.
This classroom is a bilingual space; readings and discussions will be held in both English and Arabic. The course emphasizes translation from Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) to English.
