Dear MES Forum,

I had the pleasure of running into Emerita Professor Sabra Webber the other day and I learned about what she’s been writing lately. Look at what she has been up to. . . three essays on Alan Jabbour's family immigration saga for the North Carolina State University’s Khayrallah Center for Lebanese Diaspora Studies:

. . .and a chapter in Emerging Perspectives in the Study of Folklore and Performance on Collin Kaepernick taking a knee in the name of social justice.
From Sabra:

My chapter looks at two moments in big money American sports history, one during the Mexico City Olympics in 1968 and one on going, where Colin Kaepernick, and then other NFL players, and then players globally in other big money sports started taking a knee in the name of social justice.
One of my inspirations for thinking about big money sports and social justice were the essays and later a book, The Turbulent World of Middle East Soccer, by James Dorsey in which he grapples with the complex relationships between politics and soccer culture in the Middle East/North Africa.

2025. “Spectacular Dissent: Colin Kaepernick Takes a Knee.” in Emerging Perspectives in the Study of Folklore and Performance. Solimar Otero and Anthony Bak Buccitelli eds. 258-278

Fascinating pieces to delve into. Also, James Dorsey’s writing is a refreshing angle on current events in the Middle East that I highly recommend.

Enjoy, everyone! I hope your summer is peaceful. 😊

Best wishes,

Melinda
