A Feeling of Community
The Middle East Studies Center (MESC) at Ohio State University held three visioning sessions during Autumn Semester 2022 to gather input from faculty and staff. Together, we envisioned the MESC as the hub of a diverse and vibrant community of scholars on our campus and beyond it. "A feeling of community" was the major theme of these conversations. Our team has been working continually with our advisory board members on its strategy to implement needed changes for visibility and improving student experience. Thanks to current members, Magda El-Sherbini, Larry Hurtubise, Yigit Akın, Danielle Schoon, Marité Labaki, and Shurouq Ibrahim. Over the past 2 years we have instituted regular gatherings of our OSU community, increased student opportunities for learning about the Middle East and accessing faculty mentorship, curated resources for teaching and learning about Israel/Palestine that are responsive to the current conflict, created new resources and learning opportunities about food systems in the Middle East, and made OSU more visible in the Middle East through academic engagement. Starting in Autumn semeste of 2023 we began formally including student input as well by including a graduate student on our advisory board and holding meetings with student organization leaders. We hope you'll enjoy the brief snapshots of these accomplishments in the following newsletter. Thanks for your support!

A Report on Digital Arabia
The Middle East Studies Center collaborated with Near Eastern and South Asian Languages and Cultures (NESA) to organize and host the launch workshop of OCIANA 2 on September 12th and 13th: ociana.osu.edu<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/osu.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8aad9a415882af05c91822d20&id=30015d3bb5&e=b4cf1ef6e9__;!!KGKeukY!woUbE3vzflNMNahAeYR_DQwgyfLW7ZLl2RsjPeInZZmsEUb41vjr2SxNeh7U5Z2fB3NfTPmxl1rOgkymd2nlwQ$>. OCIANA 2 will serve as the main international database for the epigraphy of Arabia, extending from Najrān to the Syrian frontier. The project currently comprises over 50,000 records and updates can be expected weekly in the near future. There are over 30,000 unpublished ancient inscriptions that await entry. Over a hundred scholars, online and in-person, joined us on the occasion to inaugurate the new asset and learn about how it might support their research. Thanks so much to our co-sponsors who made the workshop possible. We are greatly appreciative of the following units and programs:
* Digital Laboratory for the Study of Ancient Textual Documents
* The Translational Data Analytics Institute (TDAI)
* Start-up funding from OSU Global Arts and Humanities Larger Grants
Speakers included internationally recognized experts such as Michael C.A. Macdonald, Laïla Nehmé, Ali al-Manaser, and our own James Moore and Ahmad Al-Jallad. Schoon Sparks Collaborative International Learning
On October 17th thirteen students from Istanbul Technical University’s Urban Planning Department joined 22 students in Ohio State University’s Course on Istanbul, Turkish 3797, for the first day of collaborating on projects that compare and contrast their cities. Five groups of 8 students each will create story-maps as they research different dimensions of each city. The activity inaugurates the Middle East Studies Center’s course development support grant<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/osu.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8aad9a415882af05c91822d20&id=8223af550d&e=b4cf1ef6e9__;!!KGKeukY!woUbE3vzflNMNahAeYR_DQwgyfLW7ZLl2RsjPeInZZmsEUb41vjr2SxNeh7U5Z2fB3NfTPmxl1rOgkzm5YfeGg$> designed to spark new high-impact courses like this one, taught by Sociology faculty member and International Affairs COIL Fellow, Dr. Danielle Schoon. Dr. Schoon's course is an exemplar for MESC’s mission to make an impact on the curricular ecosystem at OSU by supporting high-impact practice courses with Middle Eastern subject matter. Eda Yücesoy, Danielle’s partner at Istanbul Technical University, is a faculty member in City and Regional Planning. Both professors are committed to creating opportunities for students to learn about the history, culture and geography of Istanbul while increasing their intercultural awareness. Students teaching each other about their own cities is a process of cultural translation that results in transformation alongside the subject knowledge they gain. Feedback From Students: Tell Us More About Middle East Studies!
Student experience and input are central to our program decision-making at the Center and we make their initiatives a priority through our internship program and by supporting their events and activities. This semester, we invited faculty to join us in our quest to continue learning from student perspectives. Faculty teaching courses in Arabic, Anthropology, Persian, Turkish Culture and others integrated a midpoint survey (see more at go.osu.edu/mcfi<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/osu.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8aad9a415882af05c91822d20&id=3a16c03bc8&e=b4cf1ef6e9__;!!KGKeukY!woUbE3vzflNMNahAeYR_DQwgyfLW7ZLl2RsjPeInZZmsEUb41vjr2SxNeh7U5Z2fB3NfTPmxl1rOgkxXBEHY4Q$>) that included questions about Middle East Studies Center community events. MESC Advisory Board Member, Larry Hurtubise<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/osu.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8aad9a415882af05c91822d20&id=ec22c11452&e=b4cf1ef6e9__;!!KGKeukY!woUbE3vzflNMNahAeYR_DQwgyfLW7ZLl2RsjPeInZZmsEUb41vjr2SxNeh7U5Z2fB3NfTPmxl1rOgkyghRhLfw$> of the Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning, conducted a short orientation for faculty, and supported their survey process and data analysis. We learned that students want more information about what is going on with Middle East Studies at Ohio State University. MESC will create a module in Carmen on Resources for Middle East Studies at Ohio State, and actively reach out to faculty and their students to raise their awareness about the opportunities available to learn about the Middle East at Ohio State. We now offer a five-minute classroom visit to share a little bit about MESC and these resources, as well. Take us up on it! mcclimans.2 at osu.edu<mailto:mcclimans.2 at osu.edu>

Sixty three people attended the Zoom presentation. Funda Oral, and Department of NESA and Sociology faculty member Dr. Danielle Schoon, facilitated the discussion. Amigo talked about hip hop as a way of creating value. . . “from nothing, you can make big stuff.” His presentation shed light on the fact that everyone has this ability at their core. “We can change the world with a word, a move, a smell, or a line.” “Zeybreaking” is Amigo’s unique hybrid of break dancing, Zeybek movements, and Voguing.

How MESC Builds Visibility
The Middle East Studies Center (MESC) plays an important role in strengthening global research ties and promoting international collaboration at Ohio State. Our activities are part of a comprehensive framework at OSU that not only educates students about the Middle East but also makes it easier for faculty and students to access the resources and connections they need to conduct research in the region.
The director of MESC, Prof. Joy McCorriston, is a member of the Royal Al-Ula Commission in Saudi Arabia. In November, she visited Al-Ula (Hegra) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Tas Tepeler (Stonemounds) region in eastern Turkey. Discoveries at these UNESCO World Heritage sites are building our knowledge of human history, and our understanding of humanity. They are only two of the heritage projects MESC supports.
The Middle East Studies Center will complete a Memorandum of Agreement between OSU and Istanbul Technical University in the coming days. The collaboration between OSU faculty member Danielle Schoon and ITU faculty member Eda Yücesoy has already impacted 30 students, 22 from OSU (see “Schoon Sparks Collaborative Learning”).
The Center’s support for the Digital Arabia Project forged new connections and strengthened existing ties through the OCIANA 2.0 Launch Workshop we co-hosted (see “Report on Digital Arabia”).
Finally, MESC strengthens the university's international ties with partnerships across the Middle East, from Egypt to Yemen, facilitating language studies, research collaborations, and archaeological projects by maintaining the university’s memberships in American Institute of Yemeni Studies (AIYS) , the Center for Arabic Study Abroad (CASA) , The Middle East Studies Association (MESA) , and the American Research Institute in Turkey (ARIT) .
We encourage you to learn more about the ways in which MESC and all of the area studies centers play a role in internationalization at OSU by listening to this recent podcast episode<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/osu.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8aad9a415882af05c91822d20&id=c4e3eb9eb2&e=b4cf1ef6e9__;!!KGKeukY!woUbE3vzflNMNahAeYR_DQwgyfLW7ZLl2RsjPeInZZmsEUb41vjr2SxNeh7U5Z2fB3NfTPmxl1rOgkzp72zSKA$> with Kaya Şahin, Vice Provost for Global Strategies and International Affairs, on Faculty Affairs Leadership<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/osu.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8aad9a415882af05c91822d20&id=2331e43f71&e=b4cf1ef6e9__;!!KGKeukY!woUbE3vzflNMNahAeYR_DQwgyfLW7ZLl2RsjPeInZZmsEUb41vjr2SxNeh7U5Z2fB3NfTPmxl1rOgkzD0fkSzQ$>.

Director Engages English Class in Oman
On October 14th the Director of MESC, Joy McCorriston, presented her research on Dofar Heritage to 22 students via zoom, in an advanced-level English class at Dhofar University, a private, 4-year college in Salalah, Oman. McCorriston's team researches small-scale stone monuments that ancient pastoralists erected in Dhofar’s desert interior. Their findings showed that these monuments were essential touchstones for building social communities that mobile and widely dispersed people needed to survive in arid regions. It wasn't possible for these groups to live in settled, tightly populated villages. The focus of their conversation was “How do archaeologists blend storytelling with data from excavations to reconstruct the lives and experiences of ancient peoples?” They also touched upon the ways in which Ibn Khaldun’s Bayt-State model relates to the rise of Arabian kingdoms. This last question reveals the intensity and preparation of these (mostly women) students, for the question stems from a journal article McCorriston wrote in 2013!

Stories of Middle Eastern and African Food Systems
The Middle East Studies Center and the Center for African Studies are working with our partner Jodi Spencer, owner of the Vincent Walters Urban Farm, in the Bronzeville-King-Lincoln neighborhood. Our collaboration, the “Stories of Middle Eastern and African Food Systems” project will create opportunities to learn about diverse cultural communities, locally and globally, while contributing to our local food system. We will share our knowledge further by working with teachers. During the summer of 2024, the Middle East Studies Center organized a session for teachers in the International Affairs Area Studies professional development program, Teacher Seminar 2024. They learned about Food Sovereignty in the Middle East from OSU Fellow and President’s Postdoctoral Scholar, Dr. Bürge Abiral (go.osu.edu/mideast-food-sov). “Stories of Middle Eastern and African Food Systems” originates from connections made at the "Community-Centered Approaches for Food Systems Transformation Workshop<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/osu.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8aad9a415882af05c91822d20&id=2cbf8ccea1&e=b4cf1ef6e9__;!!KGKeukY!woUbE3vzflNMNahAeYR_DQwgyfLW7ZLl2RsjPeInZZmsEUb41vjr2SxNeh7U5Z2fB3NfTPmxl1rOgkw8Q67gKw$>" held at Ohio State University on October 13-14, 2022. Organized by OSU units in collaboration with Central State University, the event brought together representatives from 27 OSU units, Central State University, Menominee Tribal College, five government offices, and six non-profit organizations. The workshop’s goal was to foster university-community partnerships and resulted in new connections between practitioners, government, and university networks. A team formed at the workshop is working on Goal B-10 of Columbus's Food System Plan, which focuses on engaging cultural communities and addressing inequities and continues to develop educational activities. “Stories of Middle Eastern and African Food Systems” serves as an important next step in community engagement and networking with key players in the local food system and cultural heritage communities. We will organize activities and materials to share at farmers' markets and cultural festivals. Our hands-on learning and storytelling approach will make the materials engaging and well-integrated into the festivities.
