Professor Dr. Hilal Livaoglu Menguc

Dr. Hilal Livaoglu-Menguc was born in 1985, Istanbul. After graduating from the Faculty of Theology at Marmara University in 2008, she pursued Arabic studies at Kuwait University for one year. She completed her MA at Marmara University Institute of Social Sciences in 2011 with a thesis titled "Back to the Ancient Heritage in Egypt: The Idea of Pharaonism." She went on to earn her Ph.D. at Istanbul University, Department of Islamic History, with a dissertation titled "The Debates on Caliphate in the Egyptian Press 1922-1926" in 2017.

Her research interests are centered around the Arab provinces of the Ottoman Empire and Egypt during the Second Constitutional Era, the intellectual history of modern Egypt, with a specific focus on the formation of Egyptian Nationalism and the contemporary debates surrounding the idea of the caliphate.

Dr. Livaoglu-Menguc is currently working on a book project exploring the Repercussions of the Italo-Turkish and the Balkan Wars in the Arab lands with a particular focus on the Arabic Press and memoirs during the years 1911-1914.
