Psychology Club Meeting: Meet Ohio State Marion’s New Mental Health Counselor
Wednesday, February 20, 12:15 p.m., Morrill Hall, room 224
Leslie Beary, Ohio State Marion’s new Mental Health Counselor, will be here to talk about mental health support on the Marion campus. Please join us for information and an opportunity to ask questions about the counseling support services that are available to students. The meeting will be finished by 1 p.m. so you can get to your classes.

Matiness That Matter: Yesterday, the AIDS Crisis in Africa
On Thursday, February 21st, The Office of Student Life and Diversity is continuing its series called Matinees that Matter. This lunch and learn program, which began on Ohio State’s Columbus campus, seeks to bring attention to issues related to race, class, and gender inequalities. We plan on holding a discussion session led by faculty, staff and community members, each month. The movie Yesterday will be facilitated by Ohio State Marion academic advisor Wolali Dedo. As beautiful as it is heartbreaking, the Oscar®-nominated drama Yesterday brings an intimate human perspective to the AIDS crisis in Africa. On the surface, it's a harsh and devastating story about bad things happening to good people, but such a limited description robs the film of its warmth and tender compassion. This is an informal discussion, please feel free to come and go as you wish. This month's event will be held in Morrill Hall, in Room 100, 11:00am-1:00 p.m. Bring your own lunch.

Great Deals on Gently Used Computers on Campus
The Ohio State University at Marion will hold a public sale on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Guthery Community Room. The sale will consist of used computers, laptops, printers, and other miscellaneous items. We are placing a limit of 2 units per person until after 2 p.m. We will accept cash or checks. All payments are due prior to the removal of any equipment. No early sales. Please contact Pam Patterson at 740-725-6150 with any questions.

Access Pass for Weight Room/Fitness Area
Student Activities introduces access pass to help keep campus community safer
Beginning Monday, February 18th, Marion campus students, faculty, and staff will be asked to visit the Office of Student Activities to check out an access pass to swipe in order to gain access to the fitness and weight room facility in the Alber Student Center. Students, faculty, and staff will be asked to leave their respective OSU or MTC ID with the desk worker in the Office of Student Activities (SD 104) in exchange they will be issued a pass, and are asked to return the pass when they are done working out. The campus fitness and weight room facilities are benefits of being a student or employee of Ohio State Marion and Marion Technical College. By introducing the access pass, campus personnel control who accesses the facility, providing a more secure and conducive environment for our students, faculty, and staff. For questions or more information contact the Office of Student Activities at 740-725-6206.

Interested in Sentencing Laws and Their Implications?
Join the Ohio State Marion Sociology/Criminology Club Current Events Discussion
Thursday, February 21, 2013, 12:20 p.m. – 1:15 p.m., Morrill Hall, Room 105
Ohio's revised criminal sentencing laws have resulted in 180 fewer non-violent 4th and 5th degree felony inmates in our prisons. The recidivism rate has dropped to 31.2% while the national average is close to 50%. The Ohio prison population has dropped below 50,000, the lowest since November, 2008. How do these changes affect public safety? All interested students are encouraged to attend. Cookies will be served.

Science Café Talks Fab Labs
Join David Richardson of Lorain County Community College on Tuesday, March 5, at 7 p.m. at the Infinity Restaurant, 267 W. Center Street, Marion, OH for our March Science Café, Fab Labs: Fabricating the Future.

Fab Labs are digital fabrication laboratories which use computers and tools that let (almost) anyone make (almost) anything. Fab Labs began at the turn of the century as outreach by MIT’s Center for Bits & Atoms. Its director, Prof. Neil Gershenfeld, created a community Lab in South Boston and cloned it outside the U.S. in Third World societies. Since then, more than 125 Fab Labs have taken root, about half of them in the United States. A flagship Fab Lab is at Ohio’s Lorain County Community College. It opened in June 2005 and was the first in the U.S. outside MIT. Like the fabled Bell Labs, Fab Labs encourage creativity, risk-taking, and strategic planning. For more information, see http://fab.cba.mit.edu/about/faq/

Prof. David Richardson is the Initiator and Director for Outreach for the United States Fab Lab Network. At this science café he will talk about The ABC’s of Fab and their use in education, business, and (especially) community development.

Confronting Plagiarism Workshop on Campus (Faculty & Staff Only Event)
"Confronting students who plagiarize work can be a very frustrating affair. The ubiquity of copy-and-pasteable information on the internet makes it easy for students to ignore their ethical responsibilities in academic research and writing. In this session, we will explore strategies that make it difficult for students to plagiarize and, more importantly, help them better understand ethical research and writing in various disciplines."

When: Tuesday, Feb 19, 12:15-1:10 pm
Where: Alber Center Training Room (Maynard 125), with teleconferencing to Delaware (room TBA)
Perks: Pizza will be available in Marion only (apologies to Delaware colleagues); please bring your own beverage.
