History Candidate Teaching Presentation
Students, faculty, and staff are invited to join the History Search Committee for an upcoming teaching presentation "The Silk Road and the Spread of Buddhism" by Dr. Meiyu Hsieh, Tuesday, January 29, noon-1 p.m., in Morrill Hall, Room 290. Dr. Hsieh is a candidate for the pre-modern, non-western teaching position at Ohio State Marion. She will also be available to meet with interested faculty, staff, and students twice during the day, 11:00-11:45 a.m. and 3:10-4:00 p.m., both in the Faculty Lounge, 3rd floor, Morrill Hall.

Dr. Meiyu Hsieh holds a Ph.D. in History from Stanford University (2011) and is currently a Post-Doctoral Lecturer and Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education at Stanford University. She is an expert in the Han Dynasty in China and works specifically on its frontiers with Central Asia and the beginnings of the Silk Road. Dr. Hsieh's work explores the construction of Han Chinese identity in the context of the complex state-to-state and informal networks that defined ancient Eurasia in the first centuries of the Common Era, as well as how Han Chinese identity has been re-constructed through more modern historiographic renderings. Dr. Hsieh's dissertation explores what it meant and means to be Chinese from the "edges" of the empire, where such demarcations gain particular saliency and are continually re-worked.

Campus Crime Update: Money Scam
Over the past few weeks there has been a person on campus attempting to scam money out of students and staff. The scenarios go something like this:

The suspect will approach the victim and will appear very distraught. He normally claims he is a student and needs some cash to get to Columbus because of some type of emergency. Normally it is because his wife or child was transported by Med-flight to one of the Columbus hospitals and he needs money for gas to get to the hospital to be with them. He may even offer to show his I.D. or give a phone number. The victims so far have not asked for his I.D. and have given money to the person because he is so convincing. To date this person has scammed two staff members and one student.

The suspect is a white male, about 5’8”, 165 pounds, 30 to 35 years of age, balding and very close haircut and had about a two day growth of facial hair. He wore a red hoodie, blue jeans, dark green coat, white tennis shoes and had a large backpack. I do have video of this person.

Remember, NEVER give money to any person you do not personally know, even if they give you a hard luck story. There are several options for a person if they need assistance. Direct them to one of the counselors or staff members or call me. If the person does need assistance, the university has formal procedures to assist those in need. If you have had any type of incident similar to this recently, please contact Marion Campus Public Safety Supervisor, Sergeant Ron Kuszmaul>

Tylka Co-Authors Book on Healthy Eating in Schools
In light of the prevalence of media attention and school concern over both childhood obesity and eating disorders, Ohio State Marion associate professor Dr. Tracy Tylka recently co-authored a book on the subject entitled, Healthy Eating in Schools: Evidence-Based Interventions to Help Kids Thrive.

A noted researcher and international expert on body image and eating behavior, Tylka co-authored Healthy Eating in Schools with Catherine P. Cook-Cottone, PhD and Evelyn Tribole, MS, RD. The book calls upon the expertise of the three authors and looks at an empirically-based "conceptual model" for understanding child eating problems. This model serves as a guide to implement more effective programs in schools that foster physical and psychological health via "body acceptance and intuitive eating — a flexible, healthy eating behavior involving awareness of the body's hunger and satiety cues."

The book is scheduled to be released April 15, 2013 and is being published by the American Psychological Association. To learn more or order a copy of the book visit, the American Psychology Association website: http://www.apa.org/pubs/books/4317303.aspx.

Science Café February Discusses Women in Ohio’s Prisons
Science Café is free and open to the campus community and the public
Brenda Chaney from the Department of Sociology at The Ohio State University will present Women in Ohio's Prisons at the next Science Café, Tuesday, February 5, 7 p.m., at the Infinity Restaurant in Downtown Marion’s historic Harding Hotel. How is the Ohio Reformatory for Women (ORW) meeting the needs of incarcerated women? Researchers in the 1960s and 1970s concluded that “pastel fascism” described the atmosphere of women’s institutions. Rather than encouraging independence, the goal was to make incarcerated women easy to control. The role of women in our society has changed since the 1960s and the societal problems that send women to prison have also changed. The challenge facing ORW is to identify those problems and to then provide programming that will give the women the opportunity to learn the skills needed to leave the prison as independent, contributing members of their communities. We will discuss the options for change available at ORW, including education, job training, alcohol and drug addiction treatment, mental health services, and community service programming.
