The Ohio State University at Marion is pleased to welcome Mrs. Sybil Edwards-McNabb, president of the Ohio NAACP, as this year's speaker for the annual Norman Thomas Memorial Lecture. She will present a talk entitled, "The Civil Rights Struggle Today."
Edwards-McNabb will discuss the current state of the civil rights struggle as we approach the fiftieth anniversary of some of the most significant milestones in the fight for racial and social justice. In the context of escalating instances of hate crimes and the controversial killing of an unarmed African American teenager in Florida by a neighborhood watch captain, the question of racial profiling and racism has been forced to the top of national conversations about the state of race relations and equality in the United States. Those questions have even become part of the national political dialogue since the country elected its first African American President in 2008. Mrs. Edwards-McNabb will provide historical and contemporary context for those issues as well as offering an assessment of where the struggle goes from here.
Since 1972, The Norman Thomas Memorial Lecture has been delivered annually at the Marion Campus of The Ohio State University. It is presented by the Honors Program. Lecturers are chosen from a wide variety of fields; historians, labor leaders, educators, editors, and authors have spoken during the series. All lecturers invited to speak have demonstrated concerns similar to those for which Norman Thomas lived—peace, social justice, rational discourse, and the expansion of democracy.
