Canada Geese Warning
As are probably aware, our campus has been a habitat for Canada Geese for years, unfortunately the geese do not understand that their habitat is a campus of higher education and do not like to share the campus with students, faculty and staff. Protecting the pedestrian traffic on campus from geese attacks has been an on-going issue for years and trying to do this in the most humane way possible has been a challenge for the Marion Campus Facilities and Maintenance Department. Because of these challenges, we often try new methods of distracting the geese, this year we are trying “fake” coyotes. These “fake” coyotes are made of a rubberized material that are placed on poles that can be moved from area to area as needed. We are not confident if these coyotes will help, the geese are “nesting” now and their protective parenting instincts seem to prevent them from fearing the coyotes. We would like to ask students, faculty and staff to assists us by remembering the following:

• Avoid areas where the geese are “nesting”, they will attack
• Avoid contact with geese, especially if they have babies, they will attack
• Do not feed the geese
• Do not attempt to pet the geese
• Do not remove any devises used for distracting geese

The maintenance department’s goal is to prevent anyone from being harmed by the geese, and at the same time allowing the geese their habitat. If you have questions, concerns or suggestions please feel free to contact the maintenance department directly. Thank you for your cooperation and assistance.

"The Civil Rights Struggle Today"
President of the Ohio NAACP Speaker at Annual Norman Thomas Lecture
Tuesday, May 1, 12 -1 p.m., Guthery Community Room, Maynard Hall

The Ohio State University at Marion is pleased to welcome Mrs. Sybil Edwards-McNabb, president of the Ohio NAACP, as this year's speaker for the annual Norman Thomas Memorial Lecture. She will present a talk entitled, "The Civil Rights Struggle Today."

Edwards-McNabb will discuss the current state of the civil rights struggle as we approach the fiftieth anniversary of some of the most significant milestones in the fight for racial and social justice. In the context of escalating instances of hate crimes and the controversial killing of an unarmed African American teenager in Florida by a neighborhood watch captain, the question of racial profiling and racism has been forced to the top of national conversations about the state of race relations and equality in the United States. Those questions have even become part of the national political dialogue since the country elected its first African American President in 2008. Mrs. Edwards-McNabb will provide historical and contemporary context for those issues as well as offering an assessment of where the struggle goes from here.

Since 1972, The Norman Thomas Memorial Lecture has been delivered annually at the Marion Campus of The Ohio State University. It is presented by the Honors Program. Lecturers are chosen from a wide variety of fields; historians, labor leaders, educators, editors, and authors have spoken during the series. All lecturers invited to speak have demonstrated concerns similar to those for which Norman Thomas lived—peace, social justice, rational discourse, and the expansion of democracy.

Teeth, Jaws, and Claws
Science Cafe explores "the carnivorous dinosaurs and why birds are dinosaurs."
Tuesday, May 1, 7 p.m., The Infinity Restaurant, downtown Marion

Dale Gnidovec, Curator of the Orton Geological Museum at The Ohio State University

Nearly one thousand species of dinosaur have been discovered, about a quarter of which are theropods, the carnivorous dinosaurs. From the puny Velociraptor (which was much smaller than the movie version) to the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex (and some that might have been even bigger), this science cafe looks at the tremendous variety of theropods and looks at such questions as:

• Were any of them poisonous?
• Were any of them cannibals?
• Were the large ones carnivores or scavengers?
• Was Archaeopteryx a bird or a dinosaur?

While most dinosaurs became extinct 65 million years ago, one small group of the theropod family tree survived. We call them birds. Come learn why birds are dinosaurs.

Join us for this free public discussion on science. For more information visit: http://osumarion.osu.edu/sciencecafe.

Sign Up to Receive Emergency Weather Alerts for This Campus
Ohio State's Emergency Management office has announced a new service available to each campus community. Students, faculty and staff can now sign up to receive a text message and phone call on their cell phone when severe weather is threatening our campus. To learn more or register for this free service, go to http://go.osu.edu/weatheralert.
-- > Contact: emergencymanagement at dps.ohio-state.edu<mailto:emergencymanagement at dps.ohio-state.edu>

How the service works:
If there is severe weather that will affect the campus, you will receive a notice over your cell phone informing you of the severe weather warning and what you should do. This will only inform you of severe weather affecting the campus, so if you are away from the campus you cannot depend on it to inform you of severe weather at your current location. Total time to sign up is about 1 minute.
