Brittany Shoots-Reinhard is the newest psychology lecturer at The Ohio State University at Marion and a graduate student in social psychology on the Columbus campus. She is teaching Prejudice and Stereotyping 375 this quarter. Shoots-Reinhard attended The Ohio State University for her undergraduate and graduate studies, receiving a B.S. in psychology in 2006, a M.A. in 2008, and her Ph.D. in social psychology is expected to be completed this spring. She teaches classes in social psychology. Shoot-Reinard will be teaching Stereotyping and Prejudice, Introduction to Social Psychology, Introductory Psychology, and Close Relationships at Ohio State Marion. Her research interests involve attitudes and persuasion, social cognition, and judgment and decision making. Broadly speaking, she is interested in how research on attitude strength can inform other areas of psychology, like personality, goals and motivation. She also investigates how people choose to use different types of information. Specifically, she studies how jurors incorporate different types of statistical evidence, as well as extralegal factors, into their probability judgments and verdict decisions.

Science Café: Preserving Ohio's Natural Heritage
Tuesday, April 3, 2012, 7 p.m.
The Infinity Restaurant, 267 W. Center Street, Marion, Ohio
Featured speaker: Dick Moseley, Ohio Division of Natural Areas and Preserves
Ohio is endowed with a diversity of plant and animal life, unique habitats, and outstanding geological features. Preserving these natural resources has not always been a high priority in Ohio. Conquering the wilderness and changing the state into farm land and cities left little of Ohio’s natural areas remaining. However, in the late 1950’s, with a sense of urgency, several private organizations acquired areas as preserves, with The Nature Conservancy being a leader in this endeavor. By the end of the 1960’s, it was obvious that private efforts alone could not stop natural areas from being developed, as suburban sprawl became an ever driving force in the state. Only the State, with its power of eminent domain, could protect some of these unique areas. In 1970, the Ohio’s Natural Areas Bill established that the Department of Natural Resources could purchase and administer state nature preserves. Since its inception, the Natural Areas Program has acquired a statewide system of 135 nature preserves encompassing nearly 27,000 acres of forests, bogs, fens, marsh lands, prairies, and geological features. Recent state budget shortfalls are now threatening their future management and protection. Come and join us to find out what you can do to help continue preserving these precious natural areas.
Science Cafe is free and open to the campus community and the public. For more information on Science Cafe visit: http://osumarion.osu.edu/sciencecafe or email Brian McEnnis at: mcennis.1 at osu.edu<mailto:mcennis.1 at osu.edu>.
Five Nights Presents Simple Gifts
Thursday, April 12, 2012, 7:30 p.m., Morrill Hall Auditorium
The Ohio State University at Marion's Five Nights on Campus cultural and performing arts series welcomes the acoustic eclectic group Simple Gifts on April 12th. Karen Hirshon and Linda Littleton, who make up the group Simple Gifts, play a wide variety of ethnic folk music, including selections that range from lively Irish jigs and down-home American reels to hard-driving Klezmer freilachs, haunting Gypsy melodies, and exotic Balkan dance tunes. Throughout their performance, Simple Gifts puts their own distinctive stamp on traditional tunes, creating some of the finest arrangements in folk music today: swing fiddle creeps into a Romanian dance and spoons show up in an Irish reel. It is obvious that these women love the music they play, and they know how to share their talents, their enthusiasm, and their sense of humor with the audience. Tickets are available in advance by calling 740-725-6341 or at the door. Tickets are $10 general admission, $9 seniors, $8 Ohio State Marion & MTC faculty & staff, and $4 students.
