In response to growing need, The Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning in collaboration with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion is offering a 2-month intensive teaching portfolio workshop. Drake Institute consultants will facilitate discussions on the components of a teaching portfolio, small-group drafting sessions, roundtables with recently hired faculty, and a supportive community for graduate students as they prepare for and pursue teaching careers. Participants will have the opportunity to work on all components of a complete teaching portfolio.

This program intentionally takes into consideration the needs of our graduate students of color who overwhelmingly report their graduate experience as a time of significant stress, instability, and uncertainty. While studies indicate that adequate mentoring best predicts graduate student success in degree completion and career placement, many students of color receive inadequate mentoring and support from their universities and programs.

Participants will meet on Zoom twice a week, for an hour each time: once as a full group to discuss portfolio components, and once to workshop their own drafts with facilitators present. Participants are expected to participate in both sessions each week.

The community will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30-3:30pm.

Tuesdays at 2:30pm (Sept 14, 21, 28, Oct 5, 12, 19, 26, Nov 2)
Thursdays at 2:30pm (Sept 16, 23, 30, Oct 7, 14, 21, 28, Nov 4)

Learning Outcomes:
1. Graduate students will be able to describe various components of a teaching portfolio.
2. Graduate students will compile their teaching materials in a supportive environment.
3. Graduate students will be well versed in how their identities impact not only their teaching portfolios but also their journey on the job market.
