[Intl_DxMedPhys] Mammography CE question

Note sure if this is helpful, but back in 2015 I printed the PGHS page previously mentioned to PDF. That file is attached. (In the unlikely case that someone argues the historical fact.)

There was some guidance on the old PGHS that I grabbed before it disappeared and pasted into a page in my credentials package just to be "helpful" to our ever-so-friendly Ohio inspectors. It says:

"May medical physicists count general medical physics continuing education not related to mammography or general continuing education in mammography unrelated to medical physics?

Yes, all continuing education credits related to the diagnosis or treatment of breast disease or other
areas that will aid facility personnel in improving the quality of mammography may be acceptable
toward meeting the continuing education requirement. Diagnostic medical physics continuing
education not directly related to mammography or general continuing education in mammography
unrelated to medical physics would also be acceptable."

I called the ACR to verify this since the accreditation program requirements for physicists said 15 CE "in mammography" and they confirmed that they harmonize their requirements with FDA so they were also following this guidance about diagnosis or treatment of breast disease, etc. They also clarified that that last line doesn't mean literally any MP CE would work for this category, but if you can make a case for how it applies to mammography, you're good - so something in MRI or CT that focuses on establishing and tracking QC action limits could make the cut if you believe you could apply those same or similar methods to mammography QC, for example.

I just had another thought. How many times have we attended sessions at RSNA or AAPM given by radiologists on the topics of breast anatomy and pathology? I know I’ve been to numerous sessions like this, which I find educational. I’ve always claimed credit for these sessions even though they are not directly related to the process of acquiring radiographic images. No inspector has ever dinged me on it.

Happy Friday!

Question for everyone. We had a comment in the Spring Clinical Meeting survey where someone was upset that there weren’t 5 hours of mammography credit offered. We always have 5 hours in the mammography track, though this past year there was a 2 hr session on Breast MR, which was coded in CAMPEP as “Diagnostic Radiology: Mammography.”

<image003.png>

These CAMPEP transcripts are all I’ve ever used for MQSA inspections, and I’ve never had any issues with an inspector not counting something because the title references something other than the strict “radiography of the breast” definition of mammography.

The FDA’s Small Entity Compliance Guide<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.fda.gov/media/181152/download__;!!KGKeukY!x2S3Wqt_e1bKNXQf7qlRp55gxMfNePw51_-HGjz1AQy462CaeeacD5YFQHc4VhzWRe6aiBYSZRCPUQNMBFHQNvwI-F_EqbD2eZKG8o_p_DnX$> has this blurb for physics CME
<image004.png>

Have people had issues with inspectors on this? We’re obviously trying to serve attendees’ needs at the meeting, but I wasn’t aware there were any issues with non-x-ray of the breast sessions counting for CME since the guidance seems pretty cut and dried. One could conceivably even claim credits for non-breast imaging sessions if you wanted to try to convince an inspector that those were anticipated to help you in your role as a medical physicist, though I usually just try to keep 15 hrs of CAMPEP coded mammo credits to avoid having those kinds of arguments.

Curious to hear other people’s experiences on this.

Thanks!
Ryan
