[Intl_DxMedPhys] Own a piece of history

I bought a set of a chamber and GM detector and some of the quartz pen meters with charging station from ebay, tested them all and they worked. Did not see about calibrating the chamber but my cal lab at Wisconsin can calibrate or tell me if it is close (not sure if that was something they do officially). If they are not stored with a battery and stored dry, the components should last forever based on how simply they seem to be to me built.
I got
one CD V-700 GM detector, one CD V-715 ion chamber, 2 CD V-742 pocket dosimeters and one CD V-750 charger-reader.
The ion chamber, pocket dosimeters and charging station were $83, the GM was $149.
One cool way I like to introduce kids to radiology is to put a test source in my pocket, and have kid A sweep the meter over my body and they tell kid B when they hear an interaction. Kid B is at a dry erase board marking on an outline a drawing of my body a point when they hear and interaction. In this way, after scanning over my body, they get a "map" of activity with a hot spot over my pocket. Cool way to "image" for a demo at a school.

Circa 1994 or 95, our local HPS chapter and the Columbus chapter hosted seminars to train grade school and high school science teachers how to teach radiation science to their students. One of our members worked for Lake County Emergency Management, and they had so many surplus CD meters that we gave one to each seminar participant.

Those Civil defense meters are still used today by Industrial Radiographers, here in Canada. You can place one on end by the camera, view it 50 feet away, and confirm the source is inside the camera.
Can't do that with a digital meter.

I wanted to share this as well. It’s a frame grab from a Big Bang Theory episode, and I zoomed in. I also had one of those Civil Defense survey meters and also a GM model. A colleague of mine took them. Robert J. Kobistek, MS, FACR, DABR, MRSE(MRSC™)

That Victoreen Panoramic survey meter is good for "clocking" speeders down your street (or getting them to slow down)! LOL
That's some great stuff. Lore has it an FDA inspector had the MDH on the back of a motorcycle when it fell off going 50 mph. The thing was so solid the inspector was able to complete the FDA survey!
I love the old wood cases that housed the electronics.
Thanks for sharing, Bob and thanks for finding a home for them Nima!

Hi folks
I cleaned out my storage locker in preparation for my occasional trip to the electronics recycling facility. I found the old stuff in the attached photos that I’m going to get rid of. I was keeping it for nostalgia, but it’s just taking up space. Let me know if anyone wants any of it. I’ll give it away for free – you just pay the shipping.
Thanks.
