Dear all,
I have recently been pulled into an artifact issue on a GE Signa Premier 3T
system at my institution. Here is a brief summary:
Time period
- documented cases of artifact in Jan 2025 and continuing through March 2025
- anecdotal discussions that this may stretch back into Nov or Dec 2024
Study Occurence
- predominantly on abdomen & pelvis studies, but several examples with
lumbar spine and one with brachial plexus
- has occurred in single-shot FSE, FSE, and 2D/3D gradient echo
acquisitions
Coils
- always has the 60PA coil active; for torso, usually paired with 30AA or
20MM; for brachial plexus, 21HN
Artifact Appearance
- mostly closely resembles spike artifact: varying signal intensity in a
hatched/codurory appearance
- not always appearing globally throughout the image, which would normally
discount spike
- will sometimes resolve on repeat or if coil port changed/reconnected
Below are a few image examples. The first several are classic spike
artifact:

Others appear like spike but are very localized within the image:

My questions:
- Does anyone have details that they could share with me for accessing &
visualizing k-space raw data on a GE system? Software baseline is MR30.1. I
have a service key (limited).
- Could GE post-processing on different coil channels result in the
strange, localized artifacts seen in the latter images? Or is the source of
the artifact something other than spike?
I would appreciate any thoughts. I am helping our local Clinical
Engineering team discuss & escalate this problem with GE.
Thx, Steve
