In the early 19th-century “as public, non-sectarian schools became increasingly predominant, many Christian Sunday schools, initially established by ‘benevolent societies’ to provide poor children with general as well as Christian religious educational opportunity – and to keep them off the streets on Sunday – became strictly religious institutions. By 1838, there were 8,000 Christian schools of this kind in the United States.
Consistent with this trend, American-born Rebecca Gratz (1781–1869), member of a prominent Jewish family of merchants and community leaders in Philadelphia, aided in founding the Female Hebrew Benevolent Society (1819) and the Hebrew Sunday School Society (1838). Rebecca was convinced that religious instruction for all Jewish children was imperative, particularly in the face of Christian proselytizing. One month after securing the approval of the Female Hebrew Benevolent Society for this initiative, the Hebrew Sunday School opened with 50 students and six teachers (including Gratz, who served as superintendent)” (Graff in EJ, 2007. The Society is discussed in no fewer than eight articles in the EJ).
In 2014, a copy of the 1825 Constitution of the Female Hebrew Benevolent Society sold for $68,750 at Sotheby’s. The catalogue noted: “(The) Philadelphia philanthropic organization [was] founded in 1819 to assist the Jewish indigent. As the first non-synagogue-related Jewish charitable society in America, it would provide a national model for similar societies which would later spring up in New York and other Jewish communities… In addition to Gratz, widely recognized as the prime mover in the formation of the Society, the other officers included co-directors Rebecca J. Phillips and Bell Cohen, and treasurer S. Bravo.”
The present 1836 issue of the Constitution lists on the inside front cover ‘Officers for 1836,’ and the Secretary is recorded as “Miss Rebecca Gratz.” Indeed our copy includes a full 3 pages listing the current Subscribers’ [i.e. members’] Names for 1836, a list of nearly one hundred individuals reflecting the most well-known family names in American Jewish society at the time: Benjamin, Etting, Hays, Hart, Hyneman, Judah, Lyons, Mordecai (Captain Alfred Mordecai himself is listed as a supporter), Myers, Phillips, Piexotta, and, of course, Gratz (listing Hyman, Rebecca, and Joseph), with the amounts contributed by each.
Interestingly, this women’s society constitution was itself printed by a woman: “Lydia Bailey’s [the printer’s] mother, Elizabeth Steele, was herself born a Bailey, the sister of the prominent Revolutionary-era printers, Jacob and Francis Bailey. Francis Bailey is now recognized as one of the United States' first type-founders and an official printer for Congress and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In the spring of 1797, Lydia Steele (i.e. soon Lydia Bailey), married her cousin, Robert Bailey, who was managing his father Francis's Philadelphia printing office at the time. Bailey was able to begin her career by immediately paying off her husband's debts thanks to the important social network of which she was a part. Utilizing the connections already established by her husband and his extended family, not to mention her own blood relatives, she transformed her husband's floundering business into one of the busiest printing establishments in 19th century Philadelphia” (Wikipedia).
OCLC and Singerman together list three copies worldwide (Penn, NYPL, & AJHS), all three of them in either NYC or Philadelphia. A total of 4 issues of the Society’s constitution were printed during the 19th Century: 1825, 1836 (this item), 1838, and 1858. Both Singerman and OCLC confirm that this 1836 edition is the rarest of the four.

AN 18TH-CENTURY JEWISH RESPONSE TO PATRIOT THOMAS PAINE.
Anglo-Jewish scholar David Levi (1742-1801) here defends the Hebrew Bible against rationalist critiques of Scriptural authority, voiced by none other than American patriot, Thomas Paine.
Paine made the attack in his 1793 work "The Age of Reason" and Levi's responses are here addressed directly and defiantly to Paine himself. The work is surprising in that most religious defenders of the Bible against Paine’s attacks were Christian, while Levi was of course Jewish. In fact, LEVI IS CONSIDERED THE FIRST JEWISH WRITER TO THEOLOGICALLY DEFEND JUDAISM AS SUCH IN ENGLISH.
The work was distributed by Naphtali Judah, one of the first Jewish booksellers in America.

This controversial self-published book advocated world peace only via the sterilization of all Germans and the territorial dismemberment of Germany.
In an interview published in The Canadian Jewish Chronicle (September 26, 1941) the author Theodore N. Kaufman claimed: “How can you get peace if Germany exists? The only way to win an eternal peace is to make the punishment of waging war more horrible than war itself. Human beings are penalized for murder, aren't they? Well, Germany starts all the wars of magnitude. Let us sterilize all Germans and wars of world domination will come to an end!”
The book became a central strategic point of reference for propagandist Joseph Goebbels who frequently referenced it to support the Nazi argument that World Jewry was plotting to dismember Germany. Indeed, Kaufman was falsely said to have been a close associate of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and that Roosevelt himself had composed some of Kaufman’s writings.

Issued for the Hebrew Sheltering & Immigrant Aid Society, a report that guided new immigrants to America and the possibility to settle elsewhere across the vast country - beyond the teeming East Coast.
Another goal of the report was to introduce to cities and municipalities in America’s heartland, the fact that Jewish migrants were potentially good for their developing economy and society.
Stanley Bero later served as manager of the Central Committee for the Relief of Jews Suffering through the War (commonly known as the Central Relief Committee, the CRC). An Orthodox overseas relief organization affiliated with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, it was established in 1914 to assist Jews suffering as a result of the outbreak of World War I. After the war, the Central Relief Committee shifted its attention to providing economic relief to Orthodox Jewry overseas, helping maintain religious and cultural identity via support to hundreds of yeshivoth and social-welfare groups.

“King Matt the First is a children's novel by Polish author, physician, and child pedagogue Janusz Korczak. In addition to telling the story of a young king's adventures, it describes many social reforms, particularly targeting children, some of which Korczak enacted in his own orphanage, and is a thinly veiled allegory of contemporary and historical events in Poland. The book has been described as being as popular in Poland as Peter Pan was in the English-speaking world.” See ** https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Matt_the_First__;!!KGKeukY!wtJj2Gj0c7pNdDrIYuwKqhQjzDkK0fjY9FUh2Fd57iZhfxgKwBCxmcrAs417BLbHWNofZAUhNYV9J6hvAlWB9CG_qELN9TS-efekbPu_$ (https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Matt_the_First__;!!KGKeukY!wtJj2Gj0c7pNdDrIYuwKqhQjzDkK0fjY9FUh2Fd57iZhfxgKwBCxmcrAs417BLbHWNofZAUhNYV9J6hvAlWB9CG_qELN9TS-efekbPu_$ .)

The “Kunst” club was a Jewish theater group in Tientsin.
Up until 1904 only ten Jewish families lived in Tientsin a city located in northern China along the shore of the Bohai Sea.
In 1906 the Jews established the Tientsin Jewish Union which rendered various religious services. Side by side with this union, the Tientsin Hebrew Association was active in the city and took care of welfare needs such as soup kitchens, hospitals, homes for the elderly, etc. The 1917 Russian Revolution fueled the rapid growth of the city's Jewish population with many Jewish immigrants from Russia, and in 1920 the community was formally named The Hebrew Association of Tientsin (THA). In this context the community built a synagogue, engaged a Rabbi and a Shochet. Committees for Eretz Israel affairs and hospitals were set up. A singular feature of the community was the establishment of the Benevolent Society in 1920, whose aim was to assist Jews in need and help them settle into their new environment.
In 1935 the number of Jews in Tientsin reached 3,500 and the city became the third largest Jewish community in China after Shanghai and Harbin. Large numbers of Jewish refugees streamed into Tientsin leading to and during World War II. Almost all Jews left the city following the 1949 Chinese Revolution and settled overseas across the globe.

Chief Rabbi of Belgium, Armand Bloch (1861-1923) studied rabbinics at the rue Vauquelin seminary in Paris (1878-1885), then began his first pulpit in Toul, from 1887 to 1891, after having been librarian of the Alliance Israélite Universelle. He ran for the position of Chief Rabbi of Belgium, left vacant by the accession of Jacques-Henri Dreyfus to the Grand Rabbinate of Paris, and was elected by a comfortable majority on 19 October 1891. He held this position until his death.
Armand Bloch took the reins of the Jewish communities in Belgium at a time of great upheaval: the massive arrival of Eastern European Jews considerably changed the face of Belgian Judaism, which, like many European countries, also experienced a clear resurgence of antisemitism. In addition, he was confronted with the creation, in a few short years, of several communities of Orthodox denomination, whose relations with the Central Jewish Consistory of Belgium and with the spiritual authority it represented, were not always easy.
In addition to his religious duties, Armand Bloch devoted himself to raising funds to help the victims of the pogroms in Russia, as well as Russian Jewish orphans sent to Belgium. He was also involved in a number of community charities. He was an inspector for the teaching of Jewish religion and morals in the primary schools of the Kingdom (1905) and chaplain to the prisons of Saint-Gilles, Forest and Louvain.
Bloch’s sermons, marked by an ardent patriotism, show that he was a traditionalist, close to his predecessor Dreyfus in this respect, but that he had to give way, despite his convictions, to the wishes of the secular members of the Consistory.
