            Announcement

Consulting with PSD before undertaking self-assigned projects
LC catalogers or catalogers in SACO institutions may on occasion wish to undertake projects to “clean up” or enhance LCSH in areas of particular interest to them. Catalogers are strongly urged to consult with subject policy specialists before beginning such a project. The consultation can reveal whether the proposals are likely to be approved, define the scope for the project, ensure that the proposals appear together on the same list if necessary, and provide context for the policy specialists as they review the proposals, among other beneficial outcomes. In short, consultation will save everyone time.
The consultation does not have to be formal. An email to a subject policy specialist that briefly describes the intent, scope, and plan of the project would be sufficient. The policy specialists will follow up if they have questions. (Subject policy specialists’ contact information is provided in the headers of the tentative lists.)
This tentative list included 16 proposals to revise the hierarchies and headings for some of the ethnic groups and languages of the Pacific Northwest. No one in the Coop Section or PSD knew that this was a project, so the proposals were scattered throughout the list. This makes it very difficult to determine the cataloger’s intent and causes review of the proposals to be more difficult and time-consuming than necessary. More significantly, though, the decisions about several of the proposals that are on this tentative list are dependent upon the decisions for proposals that appear on Tentative List 1903. Therefore, the proposals on List 1902 cannot be properly evaluated.
It was only by chance that PSD was made aware that this was a project. A policy specialist who attended ALA happened to attend a presentation at which a cataloger mentioned – during a question and answer period – that he had undertaken the project. He further said that the initial proposals would be on list 1902, with additional proposals to appear on future tentative lists. This type of informal announcement does not constitute consultation.
The 16 proposals that appeared on this list were withdrawn from consideration. The related proposals that appear on Tentative List 1903 will also be withdrawn, as will any related proposals that appear on future lists. The proposals will be rescheduled for a single tentative list after PSD is assured that all of the proposals have been received.
The proposals that were withdrawn from this list are: Central Salish languages; Columbia-Wenatchi language; Cowichan dialect; Island Halkomelem dialect; Lummi dialect; Nooksack language; Puget Sound Salish languages; Saanich dialect; Sechelt language; Snohomish language; Squamish Indians (B.C.); Squamish language (B.C.); Straits Salish language; Suquamish dialect (Wash.); Twana language; and Upriver Halkomelem dialect.
