Subject: [Heb-NACO] Sihot

Dear HEB-NACO Colleagues,

Does anyone have an appropriate English-language term for שיחות? This question was raised back in 2014, and we can’t seem to locate an answer. Shall we propose “talks” or just use “sermons” or?

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Best,
Aaron T.

Dear Heidi, Jasmin,

Was a decision ever reached on שיחות? Sermons? Lectures? I still don’t see it in the Hebraica RDA Manual, and I can’t find a decision in my e-mail archives.

Thanks,

A

Hi all, please see the question below from Aaron;

I don't believe that this term was proposed to, or discussed by us during the intitial compilation of the list. I would very much like to hear the thoughts of our colleagues who are more familiar with the term "שיחות" as it is understood in the context of a "talk" or "sermon" given by a rabbi to his congregants such as the "לקוי שוחות״ which are issued by Chabad and contain the many talks given by the Rebbe.

Dear Heidi,

I didn’t see “Sihot” on this list. Are we considering “sihot” to be sermons or lectures or … ?

Also, can this list be posted to the Heb-NACO Funnel page?

Thanks,

A

Dear catalogers,

Attached is a proposed list of collective titles for rabbinic materials in Hebrew and English that can be used for compilations by a single author, whether complete works in a single form or selections of works in a single form as prescribed in RDA 6.2.2.10.2 and 6.2.2.10.3.

We have been advised by LC that we should attempt to “use the language of the catalog (English) so long as there is an English language term. If there is no English language term, use whatever would best identify that form of work … Extra points if the term is one used in a controlled vocabulary like LCSH (sh 85113223 ), but not a requirement."

We would like to solicit your comments and feedback on this list. Please send them to Heb-NACO or Joan (jbie at loc.gov<mailto:jbie at loc.gov>) and/or Heidi (lerner at stanford.edu<mailto:lerner at stanford.edu>) by Sept. 30. The AJL R&S Cataloging Committee will then collectively review the list and comments and make a final recommendation or decision on the contents of the list.

       Thank you,

Joan Biella (Senior Descriptive Cataloger, Library of Congress)
