Subject: [Heb-NACO] captions

Dear Collective Wisdom, I’m writing to inquire as to what other institutions do for captions in holdings and item records, either in the cases of multi-vol. sets or for serials:

1. When a multi-vol. set has ספר,כרך orחלק as the volume designation, are those captions (in the language of the work) retained in the 866, or do people translate to English (i.e., the language of the cataloging agency, v. or vol.)? If you keep the Hebrew, do you abbreviate (e.g., s./k./ḥ.1-3) or spell it out (e.g., sefer/kerekh/ḥeleḳ 1-3)?

We

use We use the language that the captions on the resource are presented in (in our case usually but not always Hebrew. We abbreviate captions according to the list approved abbreviations in RDA Appendix B.

2. If a multi-vol. set lacks a caption, is a caption provided in the holdings/item record in English (e.g., v.1) or in Hebrew (e.g. sefer/kerekh/ḥeleḳ 1), or is no caption assigned? We are always required to use a default of "v." on our item records if no captions are presented on the resource or are implied (by use of brackets) in the 505 Contents note in the bib record.

If IfIf no captions are provided either in the resource or bib record, we do not supply captions in the MARC Holdings.

O

3. If a multi-vol., multi-part set lacks a caption (or only assigns a caption to the first level of enumeration, e.g. ספר א:2), is a caption provided for the sake of clarity? If so, is the caption in English (e.g., v.1:pt.2) or in Hebrew (e.g. sefer 1:ḥeleḳ 2)? Or something else? (sefer 1:2 or sefer 1:pt.2)?

HerHere at SUL we would not provide a caption for the 2nd level of enumeration if not is present in the resource in the MARC Holdings, AKA, Sefer 1:2

4. If a serial issue has the caption מס', do you retain that in the holdings/item record (mis.), or change to English (no.)?

KeeKeep it "mis."

Kep

5. If seasons are included the serial caption, do you retain that in the holdings/item record, or change them to the corresponding English seasons? We retain the name in the language as it appears on the serial.

Many thanks for your time and input. Best wishes, Jasmin
