[Heb-NACO] assorted works by several authors

In cataloging a ms. containing works on several topics by various authors, I got to the following rule for “devising” a title.
c) a devised title. Use the authorized access point representing the repository (see 11.13.1[cid:image001.png at 01CF0C8E.96D95AB0]<http://access.rdatoolkit.org/document.php?id=rdachp11&target=rda11-5160#rda11-5160>) followed by Manuscript. Add the repository’s designation for the manuscript or manuscript group. If the manuscript is a single item within a collection, add the foliation, if known.
 EXAMPLE
British Library. Manuscript. Arundel 384
Yale University. Music Library. Manuscript. LM 4708
Herzog August Bibliothek. Manuscript. Helmstedt 628, folio 185–192

Do those examples represent the contents of a 245 field? If so, does that matter all go into subfield a even with the periods? If not, and the examples actually represent Corporate body-ms. added entries, where does one find guidance for a 245 entry?

Thank you

Jay,
________________________________

The instructions in RDA are a bit confusing. RDA 6.23.10.3 tells us:

Selections from the Talmud

If the resource being described consists of selections, use the preferred title for the Talmud, followed by the term Selections.

EXAMPLE

Talmud. Selections

Resource described: The Babylonian Talmud in selection / edited and translated from the original Hebrew and Aramaic by Leo Auerbach

Talmud Yerushalmi. Selections

Resource described: Der Jerusalemer Talmud : sieben ausgewälte Kapitel / übersetzt, kommentiert und eingeleitet von Hans-Jürgen Becker

This is different than guidelines for selections from the Bible (RDA 6.23.2.9.7) where we are instructed to:

“For other selections (including miscellaneous extracts) use the most specific title that is appropriate for the selections, followed by the term Selections.Record the specific title for the part or parts by applying these instructions, as applicable.”

However, if we did not have that instruction we would handle your work in hand in a different way:

Using your devised title as the title proper, we would refer to the second part of RDA 6.2.2.9 and the accompanying LC-PCC PS.

RDA 6.2.2.9 (2nd part)

Unnumbered or non-consecutively numbered parts. When identifying two or more unnumbered or non-consecutively numbered parts of a work, record the preferred title for each of the parts. Apply the instructions at 6.2.2.9.1<http://access.rdatoolkit.org/document.php?id=rdachp6&target=rda6-2455#rda6-2455>.

EXAMPLE

Purgatorio

Preferred title for a part of Dante Alighieri’s Divina commedia in a compilation also comprising the part Paradiso

Paradiso

Preferred title for a part of Dante Alighieri’s Divina commedia in a compilation also comprising the part Purgatorio

Book 1

Preferred title for a part of Homer’s Iliad in a compilation also comprising book 6

Book 6

Preferred title for a part of Homer’s Iliad in a compilation also comprising book 1

Alternative

When identifying two or more unnumbered or non-consecutively numbered parts of a work, identify the parts collectively. Record the conventional collective title Selections as the preferred title for the parts. Apply this instruction instead of or in addition to recording the preferred title for each of the parts.

EXAMPLE

Selections

Preferred title for the parts of the work in a compilation comprising books 1 and 6 of Homer’s Iliad

Selections

Preferred title for the parts of the work in a compilation comprising four episodes of the television program The Simpsons originally broadcast between 1990 and 2001

The LC-PCC PS provides guidelines for LC catalogers telling them to implement the Alternative. Thus in your case if you were an LC cataloger you would be required to create the preferred heading:

Talmud Yerushalmi. Moed, Selections. This heading would go in a 130 field.

and have the option of making 1, 2 or 3 added access points (730 field) for each of the individual, aka,

Talmud Yerushalmi. Sukkah. Selectdions

Talmud Yerushalmi. Rosh ha-Shanah Selections

Talmud Yerushalmi. Moed. Selections

I am not satisfied with the current RDA treatment of selections from the Talmud. My strong preference is that the rule be reexamined and reworded so that it allows for more specificity in identifying various parts of the Talmud. I would like to hear the thoughts of my colleagues.

Thank you , Heidi

I am cataloging a manuscript for which I devised the following title. Portions of tractates Sukkah, Rosh ha-shanah and Yoma from a Yemenite Talmud codex.
Perhaps the “different places” you allude to would affect how i choose to word the title?

HI Jay,

This situation is addressed in RDA in several different places, depending on the title proper of the work and how the contents are presented. If you have a specific resource that you are working on could you please describe it or provide a surrogate of the title page and anything else that might be relevant?

Thanks, Heidi

Is the rule of three relevant in RDA as it was in AACR2? I mean, if a work contains several Talmudic tractates from seder Moed, one would assign a uniform title: Talmud. Moed. Selections. But if a work consists of three tractates from Moed, would each one get its own separate u.t., with the first tractate getting the 130, as with AACR2; or, must the 130 field reflect the entirety of the contents, i.e., Talmud. Moed. Selections.
If so, would each of the three tractate get its own 730?
Thank you.
