[Heb-NACO] period of activity and the 046

p.s. After reviewing this situation with a colleague we came to the conclusion that the tilda is not necessary when coding the date of activity in a delimiter "s" in the 046. We use the tilda when a date is "approximated".  So Bob's case the dates in the 046 would be $s[1843,1844].

Thanks Heidi.  That helps

Hi Bob,

I did check DCM Z1 under MARC Field 046 and the guidelines state:

"For probable, uncertain, and approximated dates use the Extended Date Time Format (EDTF) schema, specifying that source in subfield $2 (edtf).  See date table in LCPS 9.3.1.3 .

Evidently $s does not just apply to corporate bodies but also peopls as in the example provided:

046 ## $s -0199~ $2 edtf
100 0# $a Hellanicus $c (Grammarian),$d active approximately 200 B.C.
670 ## $a Brill's new Pauly online, Aug. 2, 2011 $b (Hellanicus; Alexandrian grammarian; ca. 200 BC)

Based on the above and how I think it would be constructed according to EDTF is:

ǂs[1843,1844]~ǂ2edtf

If others think that it should be done another way, I am very happy to learn.

Thanks, Heidi

Folks:

Yet another open letter to Joan and Heidi:

I'm having a difficult time coding the 046 for an "active" date. The
person in question, ha-tsa'ir Yitshak Elisha', S.t, not only had his
named stamped on the cover of the book in hand, but also felt obliged to
note the date he acquired the in-hand manuscript: 604 [1843 or 1844].

So, the rules say to prefer a solid date to a century date.  Odd, but
I'm okay with that.  Thus his 1xx $d will read $d active 1843 or 1844,
and per the rules, we like the form [1843, 1844]$2edtf for the 046. But
how do I code this in the 046? $f/$g seems to be devoted exclusively to
birth and death, while $s/$t apparently cover the creation/dissolution
of corporate entities.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

Bob
