I am pleased to update everyone with this week's good news.

Sam Kay this week was awarded two FLAS fellowships: one for summer Chinese study, one for the academic year 2016-17. He was also awarded a Critical Language Scholarship funded through the Dept. of State, also for summer language study. The academic year FLAS supports tuition and fees and provides a generous stipend. Sam’s advisor is Max Woodworth.

Bo Zhao has accepted a position at Oregon State University as an Assistant Professor. Congratulations to Bo on this excellent position and I am glad we in the department were able to help with a practice run of the hiring talk! Bo’s adviser is Dan Sui.

Matthew Schneider (double major in History and Geography) has been awarded a research grant from Social and Behavioral Sciences for his project, The New Frontier: Postcolonial Nationhood and Transnational Conservation in the Kavango-Zambezi Basin.

A number of our incoming 2016 Graduate Class offers have been accepted and we look forward to more as we near the deadline. Thanks again to everyone for efforts during last Friday’s meet and greet event.

Our department has forwarded a report to the Dean’s group on our “best practice” efforts to ensure a diverse search pool during our recent faculty search.
