Subject: [Geog-fac] [Geog-dept] Currents in Geography Roundtable: Friday March 4
Hello,
Please mark your calendars for a roundtable discussion on Friday, March 4, 3-4 p.m. in Derby 1116 (flyer attached). This roundtable will focus on a listserv exchange between a Uruguayan scholar, Eduardo Gudynas, and a David Harvey research group active in Ecuador. Gudynas charged Harvey's group as being associated with "friendly colonialism,"<http://entitleblog.org/2015/10/15/friendly-colonialism-and-the-harvey-fashion/> and the Harvey group responded<http://lalineadefuego.info/2015/11/27/the-passive-agression-of-eduardo-gudynas-an-analysis-by-japhy-wilson-estefania-martinez-thomas-purcell-and-carla-simbana/> in disagreement. While introductory comments will be made by Kevin Cox, Chris Hartmann, and Zack Paganini, we envision this as a participant-led discussion that will address conducting research outside the United States, a topic that should be relevant to all tracks in our department. Therefore, please prepare by reading the links indicated above from the listserv exchange.
This is the first in what we hope will become a series of ad-hoc roundtables on "Currents in Geography." Our vision is to be able to hold events on contemporary issues of broad interest across the department. The current event is being organized by a committee that represents a collaboration of the GGO and GSC; members include Nancy Ettlinger, Chris Hartmann, myself, and Zack Paganini. Please get in touch with us if you have ideas for future roundtables or if you are interested in joining the organizing committee.
See you March 4.
Best,
Sam
