Dear all,
Friends of folklore are teaching courses of interest in May and twice in Autumn:
Dance 4490 Special Topics: Data Justice and Digital Criticism
Instructor: Dr. Harmony Bench
May session (May 7-31), 3 units
MWF 9:30-12:30, in person
Sullivant Hall 343
This intensive May-session course will focus on digital humanities approaches to analyzing and engaging
with arts practices, particularly but not exclusively performing arts. We will weave together critical
histories of technology, computing, platforms, and data to consider cultural biases in representation,
which will inform our own practical engagement with tools of measurement, curation, and display. Part
seminar, part workshop, students will build critical and creative competencies as they explore
photogrammetry (3D virtual models composited from photographs), 360-video/VR, annotation and digital
description, and other approaches as they work toward a final project that reflects both critical
understanding and practical application. No experience in the performing arts, computing, or digital
humanities is assumed or required. All are welcome.
Graduate students may enroll under an alternate course number—please contact Dr. Bench if interested.
