Wednesday, April 16th (6 pm – 8 pm EST)

In the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts & Design (ACCAD) Motion Lab

Sullivant Hall, Room 331

Contact: Dr. View, Assistant Professor of Creative Practice in Popular Music, The Ohio State University

SOUSE (pronounced as sauce) is a genre-defying DJ and production experience that merges music, storytelling, and community engagement, to encourage movement, healing and liberation through sound and memory. As an interactive, live, and improvised DJ presentation, SOUSE incorporates mashups (i.e. the blending and arranging of two or more songs) of soulful & melodic R&B, Blues, Jazz, Funk, Gospel, Afrobeat, House & Trap records, but with southern sauce. At the Motion Lab (MOLA), Dr. View will perform a 30-minute DJ mashup set that blends sonic textures from various genres, highlighting the power of Black American Music as an archival and research tool. This performance will be followed by a fireside chat with Kenneth Johnson II, assistant professor at the College of Charleston, where both will discuss the intersections of music, digital performance, and Black cultural production in academia and beyond. During the fireside chat, a QR code will be available on the screen where audience members can submit song requests. The requests will be randomly selected after the fireside chat, and Dr. View will develop improvised mashups from the songs provided by the audience. Additionally, the mashup songs performed will be displayed on the screen in real-time, creating a dynamic, immersive experience that enhances audience engagement and underscores the connections between digital technology and music storytelling.

Best,

Stevie
