Subject: RS at OSU Spring Lecture - Dr. Steph Ceraso - “On Medium-Specific Invention: Sound Design for Deaf Theatre” - 2/29
Hello all,

The Rhetoric Society at The Ohio State University (RS at OSU) is excited to share details about our upcoming Spring Lecture on Thursday, February 29th featuring Dr. Steph Ceraso.

Dr. Ceraso will be joining us for both a working lunch from 11:00am – 12:00 pm and a public lecture from 1:00 – 2:00pm.

Lecture Title: “On Medium-Specific Invention: Sound Design for Deaf Theatre”

Lecture Description: This presentation seeks to expand and enrich the field’s notion of rhetorical invention through a case-study featuring a sound designer for deaf theatre. Designing sound for deaf theatre involves crafting sonic experiences that are more than just audible; that is, sound designers rely on tactile (vibration) and visual cues (movement) to make sound’s presence known and felt by largely non-hearing audiences. Taking an in-depth look at sonic invention practices in the context of deaf theatre makes apparent how sound’s multisensory nature—its capacity to be seen, heard, and felt—opens up different kinds of possibilities during the invention process (compared to inventing with written text or speech, for instance). As this talk will illustrate, examining what is distinct about sound as a medium for invention has the potential to enhance the ways we understand and teach invention in relation to multimodal work. As digital and multimodal rhetorics become increasingly salient, this presentation amplifies how considerations of medium-specificity might help us reimagine rhetorical invention.
