The start of a new academic year and all the new students on campus brings to mind "firsts" of all sorts. The semester starts today as we are coming up on the 144th anniversary of the First National Convention of Deaf Mutes<https://heartdeaf.com/heart/content/timelines/TextSummaries/1880GeorgeWVeditzsGenesisoftheNationalAssociation.htm> which met in Cincinnati, Ohio on August 25, 1880. Chaired by Edmund Booth<https://youtu.be/YRmCgI1jtdw?si=V8n8VjPk4O1PIdrd> who announced their purpose - “To deliberate on the needs of the deaf as a class." Addressing oralism and the suppression of American Sign Language<https://wosu.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/bhk21-oralism/the-history-of-oralism-becoming-helen-keller/> was the first major agenda item for the new organization. At their third national convention in 1889 they changed their name to the National Association of the Deaf (NAD<https://www.nad.org/about-us/>).
