I am so sorry to send this news. I hesitated whether to put Helyn’s name in the subject line, knowing how many of you know her and have cherished her. For those learning of her passing for the first time, I send my apologies and my shared grief.

The Disability Studies Program will hold a special time of remembrance for Helyn at our annual Welcome / Sharing event, tentatively scheduled for January.

Dear all,



It is with great sadness that I am letting you know of the passing of our colleague, Helyn Marshall in the early hours of the day. She has been a valued member of the Wexner Center for the Arts staff for over 18 years and will be greatly missed.



In the weeks ahead, I will communicate how the Wexner Center for the Arts will honor Helyn and her lasting impact on our institution. Today, I want to share a few thoughts about our cherished colleague. A well-deserved 2022 Tappen Award winner, Helyn made everyone in the center feel welcome and seen from guests to her fellow employees. She started her career in Patron Services as a Coordinator in House Management, then became the Patron Services Manager. In 2019, she became our inaugural Accessibility Manager as well as the Digital Accessibility Coordinator, formalizing the work that she had been passionately and tirelessly doing as part of her earlier roles.



Helyn was instrumental in making the Wexner Center a national leader in museum and arts center accessibility. Just this past August,  she helped secure a sizable grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to expand the center's digital accessibility initiatives. She was incredibly excited about this opportunity and what it would enable us to do for others. A bright light in our institution, Helyn was generous and genuinely kindhearted. I know she was beloved by all of you.



The performance space will be open from 9 to 10 am tomorrow, September 27th, for those who want to gather. We will provide coffee and a quiet place to reflect and exchange together.



We have also made grief counselors available at the center through Ohio State’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Caring and experienced professionals will be available onsite tomorrow between 10 am and 2 pm in the small conference room by the Communications and Marketing and Advancement departments. I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity if you feel it would help.



Please keep Helyn's husband, Anthony, and daughter, Vivian, in your thoughts as they go through this difficult time of mourning.
