CNN has published a link to the CDC guidelines for reopening business and K-12 schools (at https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/13/politics/cdc-draft-reopening-guidelines/index.html). It’s noteworthy that there’s nothing for colleges and universities. However, some of you may appreciate reading suggestions for other places, as you return to school, open disability services offices, begin teaching, or prepare to send your child to college as a freshman this Fall. FYI, too, the draft does not seem to be accessible to people with disabilities (although I may be wrong). If you need assistance accessing it, I recommend contacting CNN, but the NCCSD can also assist (NCCSD at ahead.org<mailto:NCCSD at ahead.org>).
And this is just my person opinion (I’m not speaking for NCCSD or AHEAD), but I’ll take this opportunity to send out a friendly reminder. Be sure to contact your disability services provider or Human Resources Department now if you think you’ll be unable to do in-person courses or work this Summer or Fall (or beyond that). You may be in high-risk groups or experiencing long-term complications from COVID-19, or have difficulties returning to campus for other disability-related reasons. Better to set up accommodations now, while policies are still in flux (especially if you’re requesting accommodations for the first time). I’m concerned because many institutions seem to be overlooking the needs of students and employees with disabilities. Another bonus for talking about services now is that you may prompt your campus to think about everyone else who will need services, too.
Take care,
Wendy Harbour
P.S. The CDC guidance is not the same as guidance from the White House, which is available at https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/16/politics/read-guidelines-for-opening-america/index.html. I haven’t forwarded that to anyone because it does not have detailed guidance for schools or colleges.
The NCCSD welcomes your opinion - please tell us about your experience with the NCCSD in a very short confidential survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BX3PHSH
