Below is information about the upcoming Back to Back Theatre’s performance of The Shadow Whose Prey the Hunter Becomes.

If you would like to attend the event but are experiencing a financial barrier, please contact Helyn Marshall (hmarshall at wexarts.org) to make arrangements. Additionally, if you are interested in attending but cannot attend on the dates below, there are other dates available that Performing Arts will extend to you.

More details From Helyn:

Ideally, we hope to welcome public community members who identify as disabled, those experiencing a financial barrier to attending this show, or as performers and local theatre folks working in the fields of community and professional theatre, as well as students and faculty in the fields of theatre and disability studies.

To clarify the basics- for the Saturday Feb 15th 2pm show will have a capacity of ~100, is about an hour long with surtitles, and is set with a minimal stage with performances by five actors who have intellectual disabilities. The piece regards the changing nature of intelligence in a Town Hall public meeting format. We are hoping to have a mix of invited audience members we’re seeking to provide greater access by removing the ticket expense, as well as paying public audience; this is my current understanding of who will be in the audience that day.

After this performance there will be a moment for a conversation and Q&A with company members, including their artistic director, moderated by Erin Hoppe (former director of VSA Ohio, current Barnett Fellow in the Arts Administration, Education and Policy graduate program at OSU), whom I am pretty sure you know already.

Globally recognized Australian company Back to Back Theatre confronts the changing nature of intelligence in contemporary society through a brutally honest public meeting led by five activists with intellectual disabilities.

As the activists gather onstage, we’re invited into a frank and open conversation about a history we’d prefer not to know and a future that’s ambivalent at best. Weaving a narrative through the ethics of mass food production, human rights, the social impact of automation, and the projected dominance of artificial intelligence, The Shadow Whose Prey the Hunter Becomes reminds us that no one is self-sufficient and that, ultimately, we’re all responsible.

Based in the regional center of Geelong, Back to Back Theatre is one of Australia’s most renowned and respected companies. Since 1999, under the artistic direction of Bruce Gladwin, Back to Back has nurtured a unique artistic voice, emphasizing the ensemble's own commentaries on broad social and cultural dialogue. Created through a process of research, improvisation, and scripting, the group realizes new work through collaboration between the ensemble, the artistic director, and guest artists.

"[Back to Back Theatre] have never let the fact that their performers have a range of physical and intellectual disabilities define, or indeed, confine them from pushing and transforming our expectations of what theatre can be."
