Subject: Call for participants: The Experiences of PreK-12 Teachers with Disabilities in the U.S.
Dear Teachers and Colleagues,
I am a doctoral candidate in Special Education at Syracuse University located in Syracuse, New York. Prior to my doctoral studies I was an elementary special education teacher for 6 1/2 years. I am now conducting an Institutional Review Board approved research study for which I am seeking participants.
Disability is a human difference that occurs among multiple populations across all locations of the world. Individuals’ experiences with disability are diverse and these experiences are vitally important to conversations about equal rights, accessibility, employment and education. The purpose of this research study is to understand the experiences of teachers with disabilities teaching in the preschool through grade 12 school system and how those experiences inform their teaching practice. Within this study disability is defined broadly without focus on specific disabilities. Therefore, teachers are eligible if they self-identify with any disability, including chronic illness and ongoing mental health concerns. Teachers with disabilities remain underrepresented in the teaching workforce. The knowledge and experiences of teachers with disabilities are necessary for developing inclusive schools and reducing the stigma around disability. This research will explore these gaps and how they might influence our system of education.
This study is seeking certified teachers with disabilities teaching in PreK through grade 12. If you are a preschool, elementary, middle, or high school teacher with a disability willing to talk about your experiences in interviews and in a short narrative, then I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Interviews will be held in a mutually agreeable setting or format. Combined, the interviews and narrative will take approximately five hours of your time. Your experiences are vitally important to understanding the response to disability in schools. Personal information will be kept confidential.

Michelle Damiani
