Dear All,
As many of you already know, we have dedicated much of this semester to building up our internal community within the Center for the Study of Religion in the hopes that, going forward, we will be able to provide more events that meet the needs and interests of our faculty, students, and friends. We intend to keep building up our internal community when we return for the Spring 2023 semester by continuing with some initiatives we’ve already started as well as introducing new initiatives. Before we all disperse for break, here are a few important dates for the early semester to keep in mind (reminder emails will be circulated upon our return as well):
1. CSR Method & Theory Reading Group: This reading group is aimed primarily at faculty and graduate students and will meet once monthly in a faculty member’s home. Our first meeting will take place on Monday, January 16, 2023 at the home of our Director, Isaac Weiner, and we will be discussing John Modern’s most recent book Neuromatic. You can find a podcast interview of Modern discussing his book HERE<https://newbooksnetwork.com/neuromatic> (thanks to Chris Highley for sending me the link!). As a reminder, our Program Coordinator Nick Spitulski has a few copies of the book available for loan, first come first served, with preference given to graduate students. Please RSVP by Wednesday, January 11 directly to Isaac if you plan to attend.
2. CSR Biweekly Writing Group: This writing group is aimed at faculty and graduate students, though we welcome anyone in our community with a writing project that is based in or has a focus on the academic study of religion. The format for our meetings will be the same as it was this semester, with the first two hours (10am-12pm) focused on writing and the last hour (12-1pm) used to discuss what we achieved and/or what we’re struggling with/working through in our writing over a catered lunch. Our first meeting for the writing group will take place Friday, January 20, 2023 in Hagerty 198. We will then meet every other Friday from 10am-1pm for the rest of the term (with the exception of Spring Break).
3. No More Than A Page (NMTAP): This event has been a staple in the CSR for a long time, and we are excited to continue with it in the Spring. NMTAP events feature a faculty member or graduate student giving a short presentation of a work-in-progress, with the majority of the meeting dedicated to discussion of the work and any questions it raises. Our first NMTAP for the spring will be on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 and will be presented by Zahra Abedinezhad. We welcome everyone from our community (and beyond!) to join us if they can make it.
We hope you have a restful winter break and look forward to seeing everyone back in the Spring semester!
Cheers,
Savannah
