Project leader (research)

Expected Start Date of Post: 1 June 2021

The Graphix Project (https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://graphixproject.org/__;!!KGKeukY!ksNg6YuLFwIG3NGddL5pEpuFRc-2ibeyaBz8IrzY4OgaMAmzaUy9FWCUZKoXQvZCGQ7lkYaFL1i-$ ) is a ground-breaking global NGO-in-the-making that promotes change on critical social issues by using graphic history books, comics, animation, podcasts, and online platforms for engagement and activation. The NGO’s flagship project is the world’s first ever “Graphic History” of Human Rights and an associated online Human Rights Education Program. The planned on-line education program will include online resources for teaching, reading, a repository of human rights information and opportunities for global engagement with a specific target audience of global youth activists.[1]

The Graphic History book will be illustrated by a two-time Emmy Award-winning writer for the television program Sesame Street and a cartoonist whose work has appeared in the Washington Post, The Toronto Star and The Guardian. The book’s writer is a regular contributor to the Daily Telegraph, the Financial Times, The Observer, and The Independent for which he was one of the founding writers. The two have several books to their credit and have previously written two graphic histories together. The project also has a working Research and Insights team comprising the President of a Market Research firm based out of Atlanta, USA, and a Consumers Insights Consultant based in New Delhi, India.

The project recently shared a survey https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/thegraphixhistoryproject__;!!KGKeukY!ksNg6YuLFwIG3NGddL5pEpuFRc-2ibeyaBz8IrzY4OgaMAmzaUy9FWCUZKoXQvZCGQ7lkRwoh2H9$ with more than 75 human rights and social justice organizations and networks globally in order to better understand how best to cultivate a new area of learning in the field of human rights and social change based on cartoons, comics, and graphics. The next step is the synthesis of this research which will form the basis of an in-depth focus group program across all continents. The aim of all the research efforts is to ensure that this exciting project helps young people with new ideas and practical ways of improving our world.

But the key to the NGO being successful in our mission isn’t just about nailing the project’s research and education curriculum —it’s about working with talented people who can help us make a quantifiable impact in the world. We’re growing our world-class team – at least temporarily.

And that’s where you come in.

The Role

Reporting to the head of the NGO and the head of the Research and Insights team, the accomplished and well-rounded project leader will help keep on track a rigorous three month (June – August 2021) program using research including focus group studies as a strategic tool to generate insights that will result in a new way of engaging youth on social issues. Tasks include helping the project identify opportunity areas and planning and conducting research. At the end of this process you will be responsible for helping synthesize findings and implement insights working side-by-side with team members including the creative and (soon to be set up) education team.

About You:

  * Your research speaks for itself. Ideally, you've conducted research and/or managed research projects that aimed to understand and segment target audiences and their behaviors, attitudes, and motivations. The findings you’ve identified (and refined) showcase your ability to pick out insights from the noise but also proves the measurable impact your work has had on creating value for organizational goals whether in the private or public sector.

  * You're a team player. You are a great listener, open to feedback and able to take a problem and execute on it. You are committed to teamwork and listen to others’ ideas and contributions in addition to putting forth your own You involve other team members throughout the process to assure your insights are implemented and that they deliver impact.
  * You work strategically. You can see a project through from problem statement to insight and impact while meeting customer and business needs. Distilling complex research problems and effectively communicating to a technical and non-technical audience are natural to you.
  * You are organized, methodical, and timely. You can meet or exceed all expectations for deliverables. You can work within deadlines, and direction as well as work with outside vendors as needed.
  * You’re emotionally intelligent and naturally empathetic. As both an expert on decision-making and a researcher, you understand that ideas and emotions are interwoven, and empathy is a powerful vehicle for innovation. You use your expertise to support and elevate those around you and actively foster an inclusive environment.

Responsibilities:

  * Reporting dually to the heads of the NGO and Research and Insights team, you will help validate and develop our understanding of the Graphix Project’s target audiences’ needs, preferences, desires, choices and decision-making processes.
  * Implement a targeted yet global focus group program to refine our understanding of our target audiences – a minimum of 3 focus groups will be undertaken on all continents during this three-month period.
  * Where applicable, and under the guidance of the head of the Research and Insights team, conduct qualitative and quantitative research studies, including contextual research, remote interviews, diary studies, surveys, discussion guides, screeners, usability studies, personas, journey maps, empathy maps, to generate actionable insights that help the GP achieve its objectives.
  * Collaborate across the organization to identify research opportunities, conduct high-impact research, and disseminate insights in the organization.
  * Collaborate across the organization to ensure research and insights are woven throughout everything we do
  * Help define and employ best practices, processes, and methodologies that enable research even outside of the core Research team.
  * Help build and maintain an evidence-based decision-making culture.
  * Stay familiar with the latest research, new methods and potential application to Research work.
  * Where applicable conduct desk research and explore and share new quantitative and qualitative research and analysis methods coming out of research.
  * Adeptly manage multiple competing tasks and deadlines.
  * Help create a positive environment where creativity, curiosity and collaboration can flourish daily.

Requirements & Qualifications:

  * Must be in or have graduated from a Graduate degree program ideally with a focus on Communications, Decision Science, Psychology, Research Methods, Economics, Human-computer Interaction (HCI), or similar concentration
  * Professional experience being involved in or ideally leading training and/or planning and executing mixed method research studies using techniques such as 1:1 interviews, co-creation sessions, survey design, and experimental design desired
  * The ideal candidate will have hands on experience eliciting insights from generative research and conducting evaluative research, including applications to user acquisition
  * Effective verbal and written communication style distilling complex reports into understandable, compelling, and actionable insights
  * Experience working in a dynamic and outcome focused environment and with cross-functional teams
  * Ability to see different ways to tackle a problem and weigh the pros and cons of each concern
