Hello all,
I'm Mitch, a historian based in the UK. I did some stuff on superheroes; I wrote a thing on Lois Lane; my book on Cold War horror comics (co-authored with the wonderful Phil Smith for Manchester UP) comes out in January 2021. I teach modern history at Canterbury Christ Church University, including a third year module on comics, and I currently co-convene the Oxford Comics Network run out of the University of Oxford.

Hi everyone,
My name is Samira Nadkarni and I teach undergrad English Literature in
Mumbai, India. While very interested in comic studies, it's not a field I
know enough about, so it's been lovely to see what people have been or are
currently working on. I've really enjoyed this set of online introductions
and I'm now blessed with a whole new list of things I'd like to read now as
a result (or cursed, since there are only so many hours in the day).

Hi everyone,
It?s so great to get to know all of you through this chain of emails!
I?m Mark Minett, and I?m an Assistant Professor, jointly appointed in Film & Media Studies and English, at the University of South Carolina. I earned my PhD in Communication Arts (specifically Film Studies with a graduate minor in Media and Cultural Studies) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. My research focuses on developing close, contextualized accounts of approaches to storytelling within and across historical periods, industries, and media forms. I?m about to have a book published by Oxford University Press that focuses primarily on Robert Altman?s early 1970s films, while also reaching back to his time in television and sponsored films. I?ve also recently authored a chapter on Altman and Jules Feiffer's Popeye in relation to the Segar and Fleischer versions of the character.
As that last publication might suggest, while I?ve been finishing up my work on Altman (for now) I?ve also been moving towards comics studies in my research and teaching. I?ve co-authored a chapter on the narrative strategies of the ?all-star team book? for the Make Ours Marvel anthology, and my current big research project aims at constructing a ?historical poetics? of the superhero genre across media in the 1930s and 1940s, though it?s likely to tilt heavily towards storytelling (narrative and style) in superhero comics of the period. I?ve presented some of my comics-related research around that project at ICAF and at the Society for Cinema and Media Studies annual conference. At UofSC, I alternate with my colleague, the fantastic Qiana Whitted, in teaching an Introduction to Comics Studies course, and I?ve also developed a course titled Superheroes Across Media that attempts to trace the industrial and storytelling history of the genre and grapples with questions of formal
design, genre, remediation, iteration, and adaptation.
I?m looking forward to immersing myself more and more in comics studies, learning from all of you, and seeing what I can add to the conversation!

Hi everyone,
It's been so nice reading everyone's introduction emails! Some of you I
know from conferences or Twitter, but I've really been able to learn a lot
of new things from this thread, and it's good to feel a sense of community.
As for myself, I teach communications at Olds College in Alberta. Olds is
one of the country's older agriculture colleges, so my students tend to
work in animal health, agriculture, equine sciences, horticulture, and a
range of business programs. My doctoral dissertation focused on British
Romanticism and 19th-century literature, but I gradually transitioned to
comics studies, mainly because I found the academic culture of Brit Lit to
be rather exclusionist and competitive. My current research focuses on two
areas: production culture in the comic industry and gender/sexuality in
superhero comics. My latest work is a chapter on counterpublics, queer
community, and sexuality in *Young Avengers* coming out in December as part
Anna Peppard's *Supersex* anthology from U of Texas Press. My current
research project (which is honestly in a bit of a holding pattern right
now) concerns the role of artist-run studios in combatting wage suppression
and organizing labour.
Also, I am the new president of the Canadian Society for the Study of
Comics, which just released our call for papers

Hi everyone!
This introduction stream has been a welcome blast of community ths week.
Thank you :-)
I am Jeannie Ludlow. I'm prof of English & WGS at Eastern Illinois
University (about an hour south of Champaign). My primary research is in
counternarratives that challenge political discourses, so of course comics
are a wonderful resource for me. I focus on reproductive rights and justice
and abortion experiences. The fabulous Sam Langsdale included one of my
essays in her and Elizabeth Coody's recent collection: Monstrous Women in
Comics. Mostly, however, I find myself bringing comics/graphic texts to
more, umm, conventional feminist spaces. My current work is on
representations of the fetus in abortion stories.
It's great to see all these wonderful projects and resources--very excited
to read The Middle Spaces. I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy!

What a lovely list of so many different experiences and expertises. Thanks
for getting this started, Michael and Candida!
My graduate training was in (and primary field remains) early modern
poetry, book history, and bibliography, and my other academic interest is
in cinema. In 2011, while a Leverhulme fellow at the University of
Liverpool, I gave lectures for (if I'm not mistaken) the English
department's first undergraduate module dedicated to comics. Since then, at
other universities, I've taught courses on metafiction in literature, film,
and comics, and currently use some comics in an honors humanities course
for all majors. My first foray into comics scholarship was at the 2018 CSS
conference, hosted by Carol Tilley, whose attendees were incredibly
welcoming to this outsider and which led to a roundtable at the 2019 Comics
Forum at MSU on "What Can Book History Tell Us About Comics?"
My academic interest in comics is currently focused on the various material
differences in "reprints" of comics, and their effects on interpretation,
scholarship, and pedagogy. I am also interested in how the methods of
analytical and descriptive bibliography, typically applied to rare books,
might be resourced for descriptions of comic books.
With regard to the interpretation of comics, I am particularly interested
in allegory, metafiction or metacomics, and the history of the DC
multiverse.
I'd love to hear off-list from anyone interested in any of the above topics.

Lovely to read all these introductions! I'm enjoying learning about people
I didn't know yet as well as hearing what friends have been up to lately.
I am a Senior Lecturer at Massey University in Aotearoa New Zealand, but
only for another three months or so. Then my contract ends and I will move
to the Netherlands with my family. So I will be on the lookout for work
once more. I have taught at Ryerson and Concordia Universities in Canada
previously. My teaching here is in 20th-century and contemporary literature
and genre, and I long for the chance to teach comics again--currently I
only smuggle one or two into each course I teach.
I wrote *Narrative Structure in Comics*, which was based on my dissertation
and is a quite general approach to comics using narrative theory and
semiotics. More recently I have been concentrating on wordless comics, on
which I've published several articles and chapters, and I greatly enjoyed
contributing to The Middle Spaces roundtable on sound in comics

I have contributed several entries to the *Key Terms in Comics Studies *that
Rik Spanjers mentioned earlier. Besides my interest in narration, coming
from a literary studies background (I studied English Lit for my BA and
MA), I am also interested in form, which has led me to abstract and
experimental comics, and increasingly I am looking at materiality and
production.
I look forward to meeting more of you virtually on this list and various
online fora, and eventually hopefully some of you in person as well.

I?m Toph Marshall, and I teach at UBC in Vancouver, Canada. My comics research has focused on the representation of the ancient world in comics, and I?ve co-edited two comics-related collections with OUP, Classics and Comics and Son of Classics and Comics. That all probably makes me the most out-of-place here in the CSS ranks, but
I've been made to feel very welcome all the same :)
For all the amazing work that public libraries have done advocating for
comics readers, I've sometimes felt a bit let down by the discourse in that
chunk of the profession. Engaging with comics scholarship -- history,
theory, criticism -- has been a big part of my trying to amend that in my
little corner of the world, and it informs my support of readers and
creators on a daily basis. I also do occasional writing *about* comics
