Dear all,

I'm writing to the list because I thought you might be interested in
attending or taking part in a series of events Dr Justine Lloyd and I are
organising at Macquarie University (Sydney, Australia) during June, 2020 on
the theme of comics, graphic arts and activism, including an exhibition and
a symposium.

The main event is an exhibition titled *Panels that Transform* to be held
at Macquarie University Art Gallery from 1 June to 8 July - with an opening
night on 10 June.

"*Panels that Transform *will feature old and new original works by three
Australian artists/activists − Safdar Ahmed, Sam Wallman and Nicky Minus,
who are internationally recognised through their graphic narratives on
issues that demand our attention such as the experiences of refugees and
asylum seekers, gender equality, climate justice and the trade union
movement. Having been published in The New York Times, The Guardian, SBS,
ABC, Overland, The Lifted Brow, as well as in limited edition zines,
brochures and pamphlets, their works capture the vibrancy and vitality of
activist causes and invite their readers to take part in positive societal
transformation."

Along with artist talks, a mini zine fair, live comics readings, and
workshops, we will have a symposium titled *Lines of Resistance: Graphic
Arts and Activism* on 15 June. We are calling for submissions from artists,
activists and academics on the role of graphic arts in activist movements.
Presenters are welcome to consider the past, present and the future of
graphic activism across the globe. The themes could include but are not
limited to:

- Tell me a story: Comics and the role of graphic narratives in political
movements
- Do it yourself! Zines and inclusivity
- (The Death of?) Editorial Cartoons
- In your face: The inescapable visibility of street art, graffiti, murals
and paste-ups
- For democracy: Political marches and homemade signs
- Your comrades need you! Propaganda art and political posters
- The revolution will not be Instagrammed: the messy persistence of
materiality and the handdrawn

Please find attached more detailed information on the symposium and a
schedule of events. Please circulate in your networks if possible and let
me know if you have any questions.

Many thanks,
Can
