  *   Zuzana Bohrerova<https://ceg.osu.edu/people/bohrerova.1>, associate director of the Ohio Water Resources Center<https://wrc.osu.edu/>, contributed to the EPA's recently-published A Compendium of Wastewater Surveillance to Support COVID-19 Public Health Response. Zuzana and practitioners from case study wastewater surveillance programs in other states provided information, participated in discussions, and reviewed their case study write-ups for the publication.

  *   Research conducted by Ohio State's Coal Combustion Products Program<https://ceg.osu.edu/coal-combustion-products-ccp-program>, led by Research Associate Professor Tarunjit Singh Butalia<https://ceg.osu.edu/people/butalia.1>,

Is part of a national study to be published by the Electric Power Research Institute<https://www.epri.com/> (EPRI). Based on a one year research project that addressed the use of coal combustion residues (CCRs) for mine reclamation, the major study is the only one of its kind published to date. The report's findings will impact national regulations for mine reclamation using CCRs to be developed by USDOI-Office of Surface Mining in consultation with USEPA.

  *   Professor of Practice Daniel Pradel<https://ceg.osu.edu/people/pradel.1> served as a Keynote Speaker at Geo-Extreme 2021<https://www.geo-extreme.org/>, held November 7-10, 2021. Sponsored by the

Geo-Institute of The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the conference aimed to create a multi-disciplinary forum to discuss how the

geo-engineering community can work with other professionals to properly cope with extreme events (such as hurricanes, floods, extreme

precipitations, droughts, wildfires, debris flows, earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides) under a changing climate.



Daniel's presentation, EDS Reconnaissance Trips: Edenville and Sanford Dam Failures, addressed his on-site assessment work conducted

following the dam failures and ensuing floods that occurred in Michigan in May 2020.





  *   CEGE undergraduate student Collin Lester was a presenter during the Ohio Academy of Science<https://www.ohiosci.org/about-us/>'s Go Green seminar. Collin, an Ohio EPA scholar

and CEGE Undergraduate Summer Research Fellow, presented on Assessing and Improving Parametrized Flow Over Flood-Protection Systems. Collin

is pursuing a BS in Environmental Engineering and serves as a researcher in the Computational Hydrodynamics and Informatics Lab<https://ceg.osu.edu/computational-hydrodynamics-and-informatics-laboratory> (The CHIL) under the direction of Associate Professor Ethan Kubatko<https://ceg.osu.edu/people/kubatko.3>.

GRANTS AND AWARDS



  *   RAMSIS Lab<https://ceg.osu.edu/risk-assessment-and-management-structural-and-infrastructure-systems>, led by Dr. Abdollah Shafieezadeh<https://ceg.osu.edu/people/shafieezadeh.1>, has been awarded a project from KAI Systems for analyzing the performance of deteriorating marine structures. The project will integrate high-fidelity computational models and structural health monitoring data to assess the current state of structures. Using machine learning techniques, the models will have the capability to infer the performance of these structures against future loads.

A postdoctoral researcher at CEGE will be supported to carry out the research. The advanced simulation capabilities at Ohio Supercomputer Center as well as physics-based computational modeling and machine learning methods in this project will address pressing, practical challenges facing structures in marine environments.
