SEPTEMBER 2021

PUBLICATIONS AND CONFERENCE PAPERS

  * MS-TRN alumnus Yuxuan "Norman" Wong's paper, Disaggregating Variability in Projected Benefits of Transit State of Good Repair Due to Uncertainty of Travel Demand Forecasts, was recently published in The Journal of Transportation Engineering, Part A (DOI: 10.1061/JTEPBSS.0000588). His unique article bridges research and practice by quantifying the impact that a gap in travel demand research has on cost- benefit evaluations for investments in the state of good repair of public transportation infrastructure and rolling stock.

He shows that variance in calculated project benefits resulting from this gap is considerable and may skew investment decisions. The real-world consequences, both on the transportation system and public finances, make a strong case for increased research investment in this area.

Norman was a dual-degree MS student in Transportation (CEGE) and City and Regional Planning (CRP) and is now a PhD student at Polytechnique Montreal. Andre Carrel served as his advisor for this research. In addition Andre co-advised Norman's MS thesis (which counted toward both MS degrees) with Dr. Zhenhua Chen, CRP.

HONORS AND PRIZES

  * Linda Weavers was inducted as Fellow in the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP). AEESP Fellows are selected on the basis of their accomplishments in environmental engineering and science research, teaching and professional service, with an emphasis on service within the AEESP. Linda served as president of the organization from 2017 - 2018. Congratulations!

  * Lisa Burris and colleagues Ying Wang (University of Miami), Christopher Shearer (South Dakota School of Mines and Technology), Douglas Hooton (University of Toronto) and Prannoy Suraneni (University of Miami) were awarded the 2021 Giatec award for Best Paper. Strength activity index and bulk resistivity index modifications that differentiate inert and reactive materials was chosen for this distinction from numerous submissions related to the following topics:

  *   Sustainable concrete technology
  *   Sustainable construction practices
  *   Net-zero concrete practices
  * Advances in the use of alternative cementitious materials
  * Advances in the use and testing of supplementary cementitious materials
