JULY 2021

HONORS AND PRIZES

  * Graduate student Trevor Gerstner was named the 2021 Outstanding Engineering Student by the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers. An advisee of Halil Sezen, Trevor is pursuing a master's degree in civil engineering with an emphasis on structural engineering. He recently served as a Bridge Design Intern for Patrick Engineering.

  * Kay Sung won an Outstanding Oral Presentation Award at the Fifth Conference on Atmospheric Biogeosciences, hosted by the American Meteorological Society. These awards recognize "outstanding student contributions". Kay's research separates seasonal signals from 20th century drought trends and confirms drought increases in the western US and broadly wetter conditions across the upper Midwest. Kay is a post-candidacy PhD student and part of Jim Stagge's Hydrologic Extremes lab.

  * Director of Development Courtney Ross was named the Inclusive Excellence Award winner during this year's presentation of the College of Engineering's Above and Beyond Awards. The award recognized Courtney's contributions to COE's climate and culture as she supported both CEGE and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). Congratulations!

PUBLICATIONS AND CONFERENCE PAPERS

  * Graduate student Meg West's paper, Future Skill Requirements in Transportation Engineering and Implications for Graduate Curriculum Design was selected to be featured in the Editor's Choice section of the Journal of Civil Engineering Education. Meg is advised by Andre Carrel, who is a second author on the paper. Rachel Kajfez is listed as third author.

PRESENTATIONS AND FORUMS

  * Karen Dannemiller has been invited to participate in the National Academy of Engineering's 2021 U.S. Frontiers of Engineering symposium this September. More than 100 outstanding early career engineers will meet for an intensive three-day program to discuss cutting-edge developments in four areas:

  * Resilience in Pandemics: Data and Digital Infrastructure for Informed Decision-Making
  *   Cybersecurity of Critical Infrastructure
  * Transforming the Climate Change Discussion: the Role of Direct Air Capture
  * Investigating the Final Frontier: Engineering the Future of Space Exploration

WELCOME OUR NEW STAFF MEMBER

  * Gail Morris joined CEGE as Graduate Program Coordinator. Previously, Gail managed the graduate program at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine.
