Subject: REMINDER: Education for Citizenship Initiative - Jan. 14 launch

Dear Colleagues,

I am emphasizing President Johnson’s message of last evening reminding us all that we are citizens, as well as engineers. As ‘civil engineers’, our design and analysis of infrastructure is connected to the society we serve so I invite you to participate in the panel discussion tomorrow (see below) and to please share these resources with students in your classes and research groups. This simple act by instructors, as role models for students, highlights our commitment to open dialogue and concern for our students by providing them with resources as they may be processing difficult issues in the news, among their peers and perhaps, close friends and family.

Thank you for your support,

Allison

The need for productive discussions on difficult topics has never been more important. Please join other members of the university community in an online panel discussion at 6 p.m. today/tomorrow (Jan. 14) to learn more about "Fostering Deliberative Democracy in Our Era of Political Polarization."

The conversation will be introduced by President Kristina M. Johnson and moderated by James L. Moore III, vice provost for diversity and inclusion and chief diversity officer. Panelists include:

  * Hasan Kwame Jeffries, associate professor of history
  * Michael A. Neblo, director of the Institute for Democratic Engagement and Accountability (IDEA) and professor of political science
  * Nancy Rogers of the Divided Community Project and professor emeritus of the Moritz College of Law

To join this session, simply log in at 6 p.m. by Zoom<https://osu.zoom.us/j/99459870387?pwd=elJVZzdhOTBjMU4xR1JibERITEU0QT09>, logging in using your Ohio State name.#.

This webinar is part of Ohio State's Education for Citizenship Initiative, a collaboration of a variety of academic leaders along with the offices of the President, Academic Affairs, Diversity and Inclusion, and Institutional Equity. Learn more about the series at the Education for Citizenship webpage<https://odi.osu.edu/education-citizenship-initiative>.

Please note that the website also contains valuable resources — including the Respectful Dialogue Toolkit<https://odi.osu.edu/respectful-dialogue-toolkit>, which provides strategies and resources to assist students, faculty and staff. Instructors in particular may want to utilize the resources curated by the Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning and ODI to assist in their classroom discussions.
