Professor Ozkan

Since you are the chair of the department, and since I am a 1982 graduate of your department, I wanted to reach out to inform you about a great opportunity for your graduate students/early career staff. I hope you are able to share this with your graduate students, post docs, and under 35 year-old professors. Applicants should be advancing in fields intersecting areas between the traditional and non-traditional nuclear, chemical, and environmental engineering.

The AIChE Nuclear Engineering Division (NED) has restarted their Graduate Student and Early Career Investigation Award. The desire is to not only provide opportunity to recognize outstanding professional and research advancements and efforts of students and early career professionals but to also spotlight these talented individuals in an NED sponsored session at the 2023 AIChE Annual Meeting (being held this year in Orlando Florida Nov 5-10, 2023). See the AIChE site for more details on the annual meeting https://www.aiche.org/conferences/aiche-annual-meeting/2023<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.aiche.org/conferences/aiche-annual-meeting/2023__;!!KGKeukY!1a5uvD3VJLf_orbdxShEDaaPeQuIx2bQIqyb4ybvKEN8oI1AknPbV4KXykiZrzFDbh4ch8S1y_khA8hbDg8r_u2-aw$>.

While the first-place winner(s) will receive cash prizes, the session is also an opportunity for students and young professionals to present their work and network with experienced members from industry, academia, and the National Laboratory system. Attendance and participation in the Annual meeting will provide them the opportunity to see all the nuclear space has to offer chemical engineers. The intersection of chemical and nuclear engineering is often underutilized, and in the age of emerging advanced reactor vendors, fusion breakthrough, and HALEU production, it is a prime time to be a chemical engineer in the nuclear space! There are tough problems here that have been presented at past meetings from safeguarding material in bulk waste facilities to which materials will best support plasma fusion. It is also a great opportunity for students and young professionals to think out-of-the-box on how their current work could be extrapolated into other areas.

The award scheme this year consists of two categories: Abstract and Presentation. A $500 prize and certificate will be presented to the winner in each category. Recognition and a certificate will be provided for the 2nd and 3rd place awardees in the abstract category. The abstract winners will be announced before the conference; however, winners must be present at the AIChE Annual Meeting to accept the award. All accepted abstracts (Session 52471) will also receive a complimentary admission ticket to the NED luncheon (TBD) scheduled during the annual meeting. This luncheon is a great networking opportunity for students and young professionals, and a free lunch! The presentation winner will be announced at the NED luncheon. All winners will also be recognized on the NED website.

The call for abstracts has already opened and closes on Friday April 3, 2023. The link to submit abstracts can be found here<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/aiche.confex.com/aiche/2023/prelim.cgi/Session/52471__;!!KGKeukY!1a5uvD3VJLf_orbdxShEDaaPeQuIx2bQIqyb4ybvKEN8oI1AknPbV4KXykiZrzFDbh4ch8S1y_khA8hbDg_07lc6Mw$> (https://aiche.confex.com/aiche/2023/prelim.cgi/Session/52471<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/aiche.confex.com/aiche/2023/prelim.cgi/Session/52471__;!!KGKeukY!1a5uvD3VJLf_orbdxShEDaaPeQuIx2bQIqyb4ybvKEN8oI1AknPbV4KXykiZrzFDbh4ch8S1y_khA8hbDg_07lc6Mw$>).

If an investigator is interested in being considered for any of the NED awards, please have them also separately submit an awards packet to courtney.bottenus at pnnl.gov<mailto:courtney.bottenus at pnnl.gov> by 11:59 PM EST on Friday April 3, 2023. The awards packet should include a copy of the submission abstract(s) and a current resume. If multiple abstracts are being submitted by the same investigator, only one awards packet is necessary. Again, please note to be eligible to receive the prize(s) the investigator must also be able to present their submission during the 2023 AIChE Annual Meeting.
Note: Investigators may submit multiple abstracts to the session and one or more may be considered eligible for an award, awardees are also eligible to win both in the abstract and presentation category in the same year.

If you have any further questions about the award, please feel free to reach out to one of the Award Committee members Courtney Bottenus, courtney.bottenus at pnnl.gov<mailto:courtney.bottenus at pnnl.gov>; Anna Taconi, ataconi at sandia.gov<mailto:ataconi at sandia.gov>; Dan Lambert, dan.lambert at srnl.doe.gov<mailto:dan.lambert at srnl.doe.gov>

Thanks,

Dan
