All,

I am writing to alert you of 2 separate incidents that occurred in the Research Center on West campus within the past week. This afternoon, a student arrived to their lab's office (rooms 212/214) and discovered one exterior door open, a locked desk drawer that had been pried open, and a piece of equipment out of place. This desk drawer contained multiple lab notebooks, which were still present. Nothing appears to be missing from this office area, however the desk is permanently damaged and there is no longer a secure storage location for lab notes. The other incident does involve a piece of equipment that came up missing from a lab area (1414) sometime during the past week. Once we have the make/model/serial number, we will share that info with the University Police to add to their report.

I will be working with Liang-Shih, his students, FOD, Lock and Key Services, and OSU police in the coming weeks to help increase the interior and exterior security of this building. This will include security cameras, key audits, and new locks for the office and laboratory doors.

Please be diligent and careful, and please report if anything appears to be missing or out of place.

Crimes are never the fault of the victim. The Ohio State University Police Division encourages everyone to lock doors and windows. When possible, please walk with friends or coworkers and always be aware of your surroundings, especially at night. If you see something, say something: report suspicious behavior by calling police. The Ohio State University Police Division carefully considers information contained in safety notices. All decisions are handled on a case-by-case basis with the safety of our campus community in mind. Law enforcement officers and dispatchers are trained to interview witnesses in an effort to obtain as much information as possible, such as build, hair style, hair color, facial hair, skin tone, eye color, tattoos or identifying marks, teeth, clothing, shoes, etc. OSUPD may limit the use of race, or other descriptors, unless accompanied by a detailed description of the suspect. In an effort to share information in a timely manner, details may be limited and are based on information known or reported at the time of issuance.

Anyone with information concerning this crime should contact either the University Police, 614-292-2121 or Columbus Police, 614-645-4545. You may also report information anonymously to the Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-TIPS or the University Crime Stoppers Tips line at 614-247-TIPS.
