Hello,
After January 14, 2020, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or support for computers running any form of Windows 7. See https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsforbusiness/end-of-windows-7-support. Before that date, Engineering Technology Services will need to upgrade or replace all Windows 7 systems on the college network.
During the summer, ETS staff will be contacting individual faculty, staff, and graduate students who use Windows 7 to schedule upgrades of their systems to Windows 10. In some cases, an automated approach may be attempted, but we know that automatic upgrades will not work in all instances. For example, some systems are too old to upgrade. For these cases, ETS staff will contact you to identify options (e.g., new purchase, hand-me-down, etc.) for a suitable replacement system. In other cases, the upgrade is possible on the current device, but may require a personal touch if automation is not possible or fails. Regardless of the method used, you should expect this upgrade to take at least 2-3 hours.
We will be in touch directly with those in possession of a Windows 7 device soon, but if you have questions in the meantime, please feel free to reach out to us.
