lecture and notes

The notes I will be using in lecture are on my class web page
(not Carmen).  We will be moving very fast, particularly in
some of these earlier chapters.  This is all information you
should have seen in a high school chemistry course.  Having
the notes ahead of time will help.

This doesn't mean you shouldn't come to class.  You will miss
things I say which aren't in the notes or the examples which
are in the notes.

It is well known that students who don't attend lecture generally
wind up with a lower average grade then those who don't miss
lecture.  I will admit that at least for the earlier material there
are some students who've had a good high school chemistry
background might be able to do this mostly on their own.  However,
you'll be getting into bad habits.  Plus, about midway through the
semester we'll be covering material that most people will not have
seen.  Also, even for this early material we often cover it in different
ways and expect a deeper understanding than you would get in a
high school course.

Get into good habits from the beginning and it will make things
easier as we progress through the semester and get into the more
difficult material.
