You should have received my "Welcome" message.

If you are on the wait list you are also receiving this message.
It doesn't mean you got in the class.

This is just a quick e-mail because I'm getting a number of
questions about the class and books required.  There's a
syllabus on MY class web page (see below).

My home page is,

http://www.chemistry.osu.edu/~rzellmer/

There you will find a link to our class page (which has most
of what will be there at this point).  You will find
other things as well.  More will come later.

In the meantime, this is what I know about the textbooks:

1) Someone asked about the ISBN numbers for the textbook, lab manual and lab
notebook. You can find these things by going to the Barnes &
Noble web site
(for OSU - ISBN numbers may be specific to this site,
particularly for the textbook),

http://ohiostate.bncollege.com

       Click on "Textbooks".
Then click on "Select Term" (Fall).
Then click on "Select Department" (CHEM)
Then click on "Select Course" (1250)
Then click on "Select Section" (5749)
       Then click on "Find Materials".

You will see the recommended books. The official textbook listed
(which they've
marked "required") is the 14th ed. eText.  This is the latest ed.
This is listed as
"Mastering Chemistry Access w/eText".  They've also listed two
versions of
the 14th ed. as recommended.  You do not need all of these things.
See the
paragraph below marked IMPORTANT if you want to save.

Technically you only need the *textbook *(14th, 13th, 12th or 11th
editions are fine),
***lab notebook *and *lab manual*.

*Textbook:*_Chemistry, The Central Science (14__^th __Ed) eText_, Brown,
LeMay, Bursten, Murphy, Woodward & Stoltzfus --/any 14th edition - used,
soft-cover, ebook will do.  You can use the 10th, 11th, 12th or 13th
editions as well.  As a matter of fact, the loose-leaf and hardback 14th
editions are shown are recommended on the bookstore's (Barnes & Noble)
web site. Bookstores and online sites may try to sell you more - you do
NOT NEED anything else!  Be warned that things ordered online often do
not ship as you might expect.  You do *not *need anything which comes
with Mastering Chemistry on-line homework since we will not be using
it.  We will *not *be using on-line homework.  However, the 14th ed.
eText does give access to MC so it the bookstore shows it as Mastering
Chemistry /

/You may want to check into the Student Guide for the edition you get.
It offers extra explanations and examples for each section in the
textbook.  It also as extra problems at the end of each of its chapters
(although they appear to be a little easier than the End-of-Chapter
problems in the textbook). This is not needed but some students have
told me they have found it to be useful./

Mastering Chem w/eText Access Card, *ISBN:* 9781323905753 (OSU custom
edition)  $140.55
14th edition, eText  - this is technically the
"official" edition.

*IMPORTANT:* You can also get the 14th ed. eText via Carmen and it's my
understanding it's cheaper.  Go to the "MYLab/Mastering" link in the
menu bar in Carmen).  If you already purchased it through the bookstore
you can possibly return it.  You can also see the book rep once classes
start next week.

Chemistry: Central Sci. Loose w/Mastering, *ISBN:* 9781323912522   $179.95
13th ed. - this is the loose-leaf edition and is
fine (can be purchased cheaper via Carmen as well)

Chemistry: Central Sci. (Bound + MC), *ISBN:* 9781323912515 (OSU custom
edition)  $249.25
13th ed. - this is the bound hardback edition and
is fine.

The 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th edition of the textbook will all
work.  The Student Guide can be useful.  You can find used editions of
the textbook and the Student Guide on Amazon.  This will save money.

*Lab Manual*: _Chemistry 12__50 General Chemistry Laboratory Manual_,
Hayden-McNeil Publishing, Inc.
/This is specific for each school year.  Cannot use one from the past.
It should have 2018-2019
on the cover. /*ISBN:* 9781533906960

*Lab Notebook*: _100 Page Student Lab Workbook_, Hayden-McNeil
Publishing, Inc. //*ISBN:* 9780738099071

2)    We will NOT be using on-line homework.  Thus, you don't need any
package which comes
with a code for on-line homework (such as Mastering Chemistry
or Sapling Learning).  Technically,
when you buy Mastering w. eText via Carmen or B&N you get the
eText and the Mastering
Chemistry on-line homework system.  I don't plan on setting
this up since not everyone will have MC.

However, I'm making SL available for your use as a tutoring
system.  It's only $42.  This is $3 per
week.  Cheaper than a tutor if you're having trouble
understanding things and need more help.  More
on that in a subsequent e-mail.

3) Do I suggest you buy the book on line or at one of the bookstores on
campus?

I really can't answer this other than to say at this late date
ordering it on line may
result in not getting the book before the semester starts.

        A)  Barnes & Noble's corporate web site has several options.
Just do NOT buy a used manual or notebook.

        B)  Amazon has 11th, 12tt, 13th and 14th editions both new and
used, hardcover, paperback, e-text.

         C)  There is only one bookstore on campus, B&N.  Go to the
following link on my homepage
               for bookstore info,

*Bookstore Locations and Phone Numbers*
<http://chemistry.osu.edu/%7Erzellmer/bookstores.htm>

4) Can you use the 11th, 12th, 13th or 14th editions of the textbook?

Yes.  There aren't many differences between the editions and I
will announce
these in class and they will be on my web site for the class (at
the "Notes" link).
I have homework assignments for all four editions on my class web
page.
The publisher's solutions manual for all these editions, with
worked out solutions
for all end-of-chapter homework exercises can be found on the
Carmen class web page.

5)  I'm retaking the course from Au17 or Sp18, can I use my old eText?

Yes.  You can go to the MyLab/Mastering link in the menu bar in
our Carmen course.
Supposedly this should let you in to Mastering and give you
access to the eText as

5) We are also quite particular on the calculators used during quizzes
and exams.
       Go to the following link,

http://chemistry.osu.edu/~rzellmer/calc.htm

Only two calculators are allowed, _TI-30XIIs or TI-30Xa_. _*No*_
*other *calculators
are permitted for use on quizzes or exams. /You MUST have _*ONE*_
of these two
models. Both are available at the bookstore.  They are likely
cheaper at
off-campus locations (Target, Office Max, etc.)./

       A TI-35, TI-36, TI-81, TI-86, etc. is not allowed.

We will NOT allow any other calculators, even if they are exactly
like one of the listed ones.
We won't even allow simple bank calculators, cell phone
calculators, Google watch, etc.
Please do NOT tell us that you were allowed to use some other
calculator in another chem
course.  If you were, they were wrong to allow you to use it. It
will NOT be allowed in
       this class.

I suggest you use the calculator you will use on the quizzes and
exams when you do your
homework.  That way you will know how to use it when you take a
quiz or exam.
